Hello everyone. We been having some nice weather lately. Would enjoy it much better if it wasn’t for the smoke from all the fields the farmers are burning. Peach Orchard V.F.D. responded to a fire call last week. A field was burning and jumped to another field and some woods. We were able to control the fire with a lot of good team work.

The Lowe Down

. I know there are those who believe that the death of the newspaper would have no impact on our town. If we were to ever lose the Courier, it would be as big a hit to Corning as the loss of Walmart was to the town. It might possibly be the nail in the coffin because the newspaper is the compass, thermometer, and thermostat of the community. The importance of a newspaper to a town is more than what meets the eye. Next to the school, the newspaper is a cog in the wheel of our region.

Celebrating 150 Years of the City of Corning & Clay County in 2023 Who needed 76 trombones? Celebrating the completion of their new bandstand, the Corning Military Band of the first decade of the Twentieth Century posed on the Court Square lawn while the afternoon gathering of local fans took over the stand and filled it to capacity. Sunday afternoon practice sessions and concerts helped pass away the dull Sunday afternoon hours.

Welcome Center Report

Hello Clay County Courier readers! Fall has officially kicked off here in Arkansas. The temperature has dropped, the leaves are slowly beginning to turn, and our assistant manager Brenda Eddington has our center festively decorated. Over the next few months there will be plenty of fall events to start up our holiday season. Over in Helena-West Helena, the Biscuit is back with the King Biscuit Blues Festival, which was canceled two years in a row due to the COVID-19 pandemic. King Biscuit will run October 5-8 with music provided by Billy Branch & The Son of Blues with Bobby Rush, Mavis Staples and The Devon Allman Project with Larry McCray & Jimmy Hall. One week later, from October 14 to 23, will be the Arkansas State Fair in Little Rock.

The Senate’s down a member

Senator Clark suspended through end of term Last Tuesday, the Arkansas Senate met in a formal business meeting to conclude the work it had begun on Friday, September 26—namely, deciding whether or not to accept the Senate Ethics Committee’s findings concerning the actions of Senator Alan Clark (R-Lonsdale). Remember, back in July, the Arkansas Senate voted to penalize both Senator Clark and Senator Mark Johnson (R-Little Rock) for their roles in trying to secure unearned mileage and per diem for Senator Clark.
