School Notes

The Corning School Board met on Monday, May 19 at 5:00 pm in the CSD Board Room with all members present. The first item of business was the approval of last month’s minutes. Next, the board approved the financial report as presented followed by the approval of Federal Assurances. The board approved the renewal of iReady supplemental curriculum in math and literacy and approved adjustments to charges for electrical work for temporary classrooms. Then, the board approved the update of the SRO MOU with the city of Corning and the purchase of a 2021 Bronco Sport as the SRO vehicle. The board approved the resignation of Aurayliea Barajas, cafeteria worker effective May 23, 2025; the addition of 2 vacation days to all 240 day employee contracts (for a total of 12 vacation days per year), and the re-employment of Deborah Thompson, Park Elementary ALE classroom teacher effective July 1, 2024. Finally, Mrs. Woolard shared updates concerning progress of the new construction project. Bids are being taken for demolition with a tentative plan to begin demolition phase 1 the week of June 11. Mrs. Woolard shared with the board that the OM teams will compete nationally this week, and discussed school board election changes that will take place before the next school board election. There being no further business, President Scobey adjourned the meeting.

Pool is Popular Place…

Benny Adams, swimming pool manager, told the Courier that there were 214 tickets sold to persons on opening day of Coming’s new swimming pool, Monday. Adams said that, although the crowd was very large, there was very little cleaning up to do after closing hours. There were no accidents or injuries and he was proud of the way persons respected the new facility and did not liter.

Rambling Vines

When this column reminded my neighbor, Dot, about those old-time autograph books, she brought hers out of storage and we enjoyed reading what all her friends, me included, had to say, way back in 1939 (53 years ago). The sad note is that 11 of those who wrote in the book in 1939 are no longer living. Dot and I have been friends since second or third grade and now that we are neighbors, we fuss nearly as bad as when we played paper dolls with Emaline and Caroline Wright. We never got mad, but we sure lambast each other once in a while when we have different views on things. We each state our view, then shut up and remain friends because we both realize that we can’t all think alike.
