In Dubious Battle
Those of you who are fans of the great American writer John Steinbeck of the early 20th Century, will see that I stole the title of one of his most controversial books to head my column this week. It was a time of great turmoil in America, as much as it is now, and he became quite caught up in the affairs of the day. For those of you who are too young to have much knowledge of that time and don’t like to read history, it was just after WWI, about 15 years and less than 10 years before we would become embroiled in WWII. It was also the period of the Great Depression, which caused a literal upheaval of American families, forcing them to move sometimes half way across the country to be able to find enough work to survive. It was also a trying time for Labor, with literal wars between Management and Labor unions. And it is with that thought in mind why I captured his book title for my introduction to my column.
