JWF named Clay County Farm Family of the Year

The Arkansas Farm Family of the Year Program has honored agricultural families across the state for 77 years. This year, the program has selected a farm family that is familiar with the program. Jeremy Wiedeman Farms of Corning is the recipient of the 2024 Clay County Farm Family of the Year award. Clay County soil runs deep in the bloodstream of the Wiedeman family as Jeremy’s parents, Larry and Mary Wiedeman were the 1984 Clay County Farm Family of the Year, exactly 40 years ago.

Civic-minded clubs join forces to assist fire dept.

Two local clubs in Corning known for their altruistic work collaborated to assist the Corning Volunteer Fire Department in acquiring much needed gear to fight fires in the area. The Corning Lions Club and the Kiwanis Club learned of the fire department’s need for fire gear and came together with the intention of each club donating half the funds needed to purchase a complete fire fighter suit. Each club ultimately rounded up their donations to $2,500 each for a total of $5,000 to purchase one fire fighter suit with some funds remaining to help go toward more fire suits.

Victims identified in Corning Y crash

The Arkansas State Police has reported the identities of the six victims who perished in a crash at the Corning Y between a tractor- trailer and a Buick SUV on Monday, April 15. Killed in the crash were the driver of the Buick, Sonter Andon, 37 and passengers, Santos Andon, 62; Rekinna Alanso, 65; Jessica Inek, 34; Nisdy Inek, 36; and one minor, all of Paragould.

Countdown to Memorial Day . . .

If all goes well, area children and members of the general public will be splishin’ and splashin’ in the newly renovated city swimming pool by Memorial Day, says, Jason Liau, owner of JRL Construction. Liau and his crew along with, engineer John Selig, Evan Luter and other workers have worked diligently to ensure the pool and swimming area are completed on time. If the weather holds out to complete the work, it will soon be time to get out those swimsuits.

Corning PD makes 2 arrests

On April 28, 2024 officers with the Corning Police Department made a traffic stop on East Elm Street. Officers tried to identify the driver, however, the driver kept giving false names and dates of birth. The officers were then able to learn the true identity of the driver thanks to a relative. The driver had multiple Felony warrants for his arrest out of Mississippi. The driver was also found to be in possession of a firearm. 22-year-old Davarius Johnson of Mississippi was arrested and charged with Felony Possession of firearms by certain persons, obstruction, and no drivers license.

Mudcatter season begins . . .

Residents know that summer is drawing nigh when the Mississippi Mudcatters hit the mighty river to get their fill of catfish. This year’s season started on Tuesday, April 30, when the Mudcatters came back to town with a haul of 140 lbs. of catfish. The largest fish weighed 65 and 45 lbs with five fish under 10 lbs.
