It’s easy to get bogged down with all that is negative. It seems as if everywhere we look we find nothing but complaints. Often, we get so focused on what’s wrong that we can’t see everything that is right. Positive school environments promote better student achievement and behavior, and in turn, promote better teaching and better teacher behavior. I’ve made one of my professional goals for the year to help cultivate a more positive environment in our schools. We need to be proud to be Corning Bobcats, and we have many reasons to be proud. As I prepared this article, I started listing the awesome attributes we, as Corning Bobcats, have to be proud. I want to share my top 10 with you.
Corning Volleyball girls traveled to Ridgefield Christian Thursday, Aug. 29 for a non-conference matchup. The Sr. High girls defeated Ridgefield Sr. High 3-1 in 4 sets for the first Sr. High volleyball win in program history. “Sr. High got what they’ve earned tonight against Ridgefield Christian!”, Head Coach Drew Radcliff said. “Words cannot describe how proud we are of our girls. They have been wanting this for so long, and they found a way to make it happen.”

The Clay County Farm Bureau Board presented a $500 check to the Clay County Emergency Task Force, a part of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, to assist in the purchase of an underwater scanner. The scanner, AQUAEYE, uses sonar technology and artificial intelligence to identify human bodies underwater during search and rescue efforts.
On August 25th, 2024, at approximately 5:10 A.M., a Clay County Deputy was sitting west of Corning at Cr 131 and U.S. 67 when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on U.S. 67. The deputy got behind a black Dodge Charger and paced it at 85 M.P.H. The deputy attempted to make a traffic stop, and the vehicle accelerated to over 100 M.P.H. As they entered Randolph County the vehicle turned its lights off. Clay County Dispatch notified Randolph County of a pursuit headed toward Pocahontas on U.S. 67. Pocahontas P.D. deployed spike strips at a bridge east of Pocahontas and was successful in deflating some of the tires on the vehicle. The vehicle finally came to a stop on U.S. 67 by Baltz Lake. The driver of the vehicle was a 16 year old juvenile from Rantoul, Illinois. The driver had no driver’s license or I.D. card.
On August 26th, 2024, at 12:45 A.M., a Clay County deputy was leaving Corning P.D. when he noticed a vehicle being driven partially in the turn lane northbound on U.S. 67. The vehicle was behind a semi-truck. The deputy pulled out behind the vehicle and observed the vehicle swerve several times into the turn lane. The deputy thought the vehicle was going to pass the semi.
