The August Corning Area Chamber of Commerce Luncheon was called to order by Pres. Rhonda Sollis at Market 602 on August 14. An invocational prayer was offered by Mike Vinson following which President Sollis introduced Melissa Gallagher.
On August 14, at approximately 10:59 p.m., the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a pursuit involving a motorcycle entering Clay County from Ripley County on Highway 211.

The Corning School Board met August 18, 2025 with all members present. The board approved the July meeting minutes and financial report as presented. The board approved the Statement of Assurances and legal ending balance as presented. Next, the board signed student legal transfer papers followed by the approval of contract adjustments for Shelley Smith, naming her tennis coach for the 25-26 school year effective immediately, and an adjustment to Katie Cole as a temporary certified substitute teacher while she is serving as a certified classroom teacher. The board approved the September meeting date change to September 29 to follow the Annual Report to the Public at 5:00 followed by the approval of property insurance from the Arkansas State Captive Insurance Program. Finally, Mrs. Woolard provided the required monthly student achievement update, followed by the update on the demolition of the high school project and enrollment numbers. As of Monday, CSD has 758 students. There being no further business, President Scobey adjourned the meeting.
Construction ongoing on campus
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is notifying residents that a representative from Southwestern Advantage will be going door-to-door around Clay County over the next few weeks as part of an educational book sales program.
The Clay County Quorum Court met in regular session on Monday, Aug. 18 at the courthouse in Corning with Justices Dennis Haines, Patrick Patterson, David Hatcher, Brad Green, Randy Kingston, Jody Henderson, David Cagle, George Lowe and Neal Smith present.
The Corning Police Department has added a new Ford Bronco to its fleet, dedicated for use as a School Resource Officer (SRO) vehicle.
