Post office celebrates 72422

On Friday, July 22 the Corning Post Office celebrated the Corning zip code: 72422 in anticipation of the date on Sunday, July 24, 2022 which was equivalent to the city’s zip code. The post office celebrated the zip code and date match with refreshments of popsicles, cookies, cupcakes and water for patrons since the post office is closed on Sundays. Photo/Tonya Lunsford

Blanchard receives CCECC Youth Tour Scholarship

Kenzie Blanchard was one of four that participated in the Virtual NRECA Washington DC Youth Tour in 2021. Upon completion of the virtual tour each participant completed a community service project in their local community, making them eligible for a scholarship. As drought lingers, trees require smarter approaches for watering

LITTLE ROCK — With Arkansas’ prolonged drought taking a toll on trees across the state, now is the time for homeowners to lend some extra attention to their trees that may be in distress. “People have been calling about their trees losing leaves or starting to get their fall colors way too early, or the bark cracking,” said Krista Quinn, a certified arborist and an agricultural agent with the Cooperative Extension Service’s Faulkner County office, part of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

Clay County approved for emergency haying and grazing of CRP

Piggott, Arkansas, July 21, 2022 – The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), administered by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) is a voluntary program available to agricultural producers to help them safeguard environ¬mentally sensitive land. Producers enrolled in CRP establish longterm, resource-conserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat. In return, FSA provides participants with rental payments and cost-share assistance.

The Overextended, Overworked, Exhausted Teacher

One time at parent-teacher conferences, one of my students and his mother sat down in front of me at my table in the middle of the high school gymnasium. I started our meeting by shaking the mom’s hand and telling her how much I enjoyed having Thomas in my class. I said that Thomas works really hard, participates often, and is so kind to other students. However, whole time that I was telling this mother about Thomas, I could see a grimace growing across her face. She just silently sat there in anger as I praised her son, Thomas.

Sight for sore eyes . . .

Farms in the area reported receiving around an inch to an inch and a half of rainfall from the July 17 storms to temporarily alleviate the drought. Forecasters report the drought will continue as temperatures look to be over 100 degrees in northeast Arkansas toward the end of the week and weekend.
