CSD presents Annual Report to Public
The Corning School District presented its Annual Report to the Public and Title I Meeting at 6 p.m. in the high school library on September 27, 2022 during the monthly board meeting. All administrators shared information about the individual schools. Some of the highlights are as follows: Park Elementary School Reporting for Park Elementary School was Principal Heather Clifton. She stated that Park Elementary has a current total enrollment of 312 students serving Grades K-4. PES has implemented a new literacy curriculum called Core Knowledge Language Arts and is close to fully implemented. This program was identified as an effective literacy curriculum on the Department of Education’s list of Approved Literacy Curricula.

Locke provides Confederate history at Doniphan Current River Heritage Days
Pioneer days along Current River were remembered on Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Current River Pioneer Heritage Homestead in Doniphan. The 17th annual twoday festival was filled with filled with living history exhibits, music, storytelling, and pioneer demonstrations as well as vintage crafts together with military history, classic cars and period costumes. Also attending the event was Camp Commander Mark Locke of the 2nd Lieutenant John Crawford Smith Camp 2302 of Corning, who set up and gave some Confederate history and heritage. Locke was invited back for next year’s event.
History Book Cover & Logo Chosen
The Clay County Sesquicentennial Book Committee of the Clay County Genealogical and Historical Society announced the cover of the upcoming county history book will be a luxurious black leatherette. A gold embossed seal featuring the county courthouse will complete the cover. A brochure describing the book project and inviting all those with ties to Clay County to submit family histories have been mailed and will also be inserted inside this week’s Clay County Courier. The brochure will include sample histories and tips for preparing a historical sketch not to exceed 500 words. The history and photo will be included in the book free of charge. Friends and family gathered to celebrate the 99th birthday of Euvila Parker on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2022.
BURN BAN ISSUED
The office of County Judge Mike Patterson has issued a Burn Ban for Clay County on Sept. 27, 2022 until further notice. Arkansas House Bill 1883 allows for an exemption to a burn ban to burn off crops following harvest.

PIG-GOTT SMOKED First Annual BBQ Cook Off
Presented by the Piggott Area Chamber of Commerce Early fall will bring with it a new event to the Clay County Fairgrounds in Piggott, as the first ever Pig-gott Smoked BBQ Cook Off is set for Saturday, Oct. 15.
Statewide community flu vaccine clinics start Sept. 26
Little Rock, Ark.– The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) will be providing flu vaccines across the state in preparation for the 2022-2023 flu season starting Monday, September 26. Each county health unit in Arkansas will be hosting a community flu vaccine clinic, which is typically a day-long event when the health unit and numerous community volunteers come together to provide flu vaccine to as many people as possible.
