City of Corning in possession of former Wal-Mart building

Mayor Greg Ahrent announced to members of the Intermodal during their monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 29 that the City of Corning now owns the Wal-mart building on Hwy 67 W. Addressing the audience, Ahrent stated, “I would like to announce that Mr. Charlie James, the owner of the Walmart property, he and his family have donated that building to Corning.” At that time the city had the deed to the property. “It’s not been taken to the courthouse yet, but we’ll have some available property soon,” said Ahrent. He added, “We didn’t get the Pizza Hut building for those that want to know.” He said the city did receive the building, parking lot and storage space. Executive Director Graycen Bigger said the Walmart building in town is about 34,000 to 35,000 square feet. “A small industrial prospect could go in there or commercial retail, which we did go through the retail academy this last year. And we do have some prospects to reach out to.” Bigger said she would do a walk through and see what kind of condition the structure was in.
