To begin with, let me say Happy Birthday Corning, Arkansas! As I type this, the cake is coming from the oven and 150 candles are being counted out and placed around the cake in a festive manner. Dear readers, by the time this gets to you, the celebration will be over, plates will be cleaned, sticky fingers washed, and folks will be headed back to their own homes.
Pocahontas - Black River Technical College (BRTC) Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Brad Baine and Vice President of Student Affairs Jason Smith, formerly of Corning, recently assisted the Pocahontas Police Department (PPD) in two promotion panels to help the department evaluate and examine law enforcement officers in line for promotions.

The year 2023 is a special one not only for the city of Corning, but also Clay County and the Clay County Courier as all three will celebrate their 150th anniversary within the year. The birthday of the city of Corning is Sunday, February 5.
Last October the Arkansas School Safety Commission published their final report with recommendations for schools to improve the safety of students and security of campuses. In December the State Board of Education approved Emergency Rules Governing School Safety which allowed funds to become available to schools to aid in implementing the recommendations of the School Safety Commission. Corning School District’s plans for the funds include completing the fencing projects and installing electronic access controls for gates and remaining exterior doors on all campuses.
CONWAY, AR (01/26/2023)-- Zane Holloway, of Rector, was named a fall 2022 Presidential Scholar at the University of Central Arkansas. Holloway was among nearly 1,200 students named as a UCA Presidential Scholar.
MISSISSIPPI STATE, MS (01/31/2023)-- Katie Clifton of Corning, AR, was named to the Mississippi State University fall 2022 President’s List. Clifton was among 4,174 students named to the fall 2022 President’s List.
TUSCALOOSA, AL (01/27/2023)-- Caroline Goodman was named to The University of Alabama Deans List for fall semester 2022. A total of 12,791 students enrolled during Fall Semester 2022 at The University of Alabama were named to the dean’s list with an academic record of 3.5 (or above) or the president’s list with an academic record of 4.0 (all A’s).
Corning City Council meets second Monday of each month, 6:00 p.m., in City Hall. Clay County Quorum Court, Third Monday each month, 7:00 p.m., alternating between Corning and Piggott courthouses.
The 4H Youth Leadership Team and Rector High School Seniors participated in the “Get Real” hands-on experiential simulation on Monday, January 23rd, to gain knowledge about personal financial management. The students were introduced to the “Get Real” program by first discussing a pay stub, net versus gross pay, managing a checking account and managing a credit card.
