The three Clay County Chambers of Commerce have partnered with Harps Food Stores to kickoff the upcoming county sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary, in style on Friday, March 24, with a birthday bash. The event is planned to mark 150 years since the formation of Clay County, then known as Clayton County.

The population is growing and so is its demand for food to fuel those extra bodies. Harvard Business Review reports the global population has quadrupled over the last century. It’s predicted that, by 2050, the population will exceed nine billion people.
The Clay County Fair Association is inviting students from Corning, Piggott and Rector to submit a theme for this year’s fair. From the contest entries the fair board will choose from those themes and the winner will receive a free meal ticket from the fair kitchen, two tickets to the demolition derby and a free fair t-shirt.

The Corning School Board met at 5:00 pm on March 14, 2023 with all members present. The board approved the minutes and financial report. The resignation of Jessica Russom as cheerleading sponsor effective June 30, 2023 was accepted. Next the board approved the renewal of the OT and Speech Therapy Contract with NEA Therapy for the 20232024 school year. Because there is only one candidate for the upcoming school board election and no changes are being made to the local tax rates, upon recommendation from the county clerk’s office the board approved a resolution to request the county board of election commissioners to declare an election by candidate to be held for the upcoming school board election in May. Finally, Superintendent Woolard shared information with the board concerning the LEARNS ACT, ESSER updates, and reminded the board of the time change to 7:00 for April-November meetings. There being no further business, President Turner adjourned the meeting.
Student-centered learning moves students from passive receivers of information to active participants in their own learning process. Learners can then take ownership of their learning. Students at Park Elementary took on the role of teacher as they engaged in peer instruction and learning allowing them to share and reinforce what they have learned.
With final approval given to SB294 last Tuesday, all that was left was for Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders to sign the LEARNS Act into law. She did so during a ceremony in the Capitol rotunda last Wednesday.
In the 9th week of the 2023 Regular Session, the House passed several bills addressing education, elections, and healthcare. The House also passed a bill to increase the property tax credit for Arkansas families.
