On Wednesday, July 9, at approximately 2:31 p.m., the Clay County Sheriff’s Department received a report of an abandoned vehicle near the Black River levee, east of U.S. Highway 67 on County Road 148, north of Corning. The vehicle, a black 1990 Porsche convertible with the top down, was discovered by a contractor mowing the levee.
The July Corning Area Chamber of Commerce Luncheon was called to order by Pres. Rhonda Sollis at Gigi’s Restaurant on June 12. An invocational prayer was offered by Terry Gleghorn following which President Sollis asked Drew Calhoun to give an update on how the 4th of July Picnic went. He said that despite the short notice there was quite a crowd in attendance and that Growing Corning Together heard only positive comments.
The first Growing Corning Together run 4th of July Picnic went off as a success. Despite an earlier announcement of event cancelation from the Corning Area Chamber of Commerce and late announcement that Growing Corning Together would be taking over the event, a large presence was met in Wynn Park for this timeless tradition.
Clair Antoon-Newton, an AP Literature English teacher at El Dorado High School, and Shawna Radcliff, a fifth and sixth grade math teacher at Corning Middle School, were recently named the 2025 Arkansas Rural Education Association’s Teachers of the Year. The Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas have sponsored the Rural Teachers of the Year Award since 2004.
The Corning Beautification Committee has selected Olivia Murray as its July Artist of the Month. Her artwork will be on display throughout the month at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center.
Miss Independence 2025 crowned at 4th of July Celebration
The Eighth Annual Datto Fireworks Show sparked up Friday, July 4 at 9:00 p.m. with locals and out-of-town attendees lined up on Delmar Street for the show. The Town of Datto had a raffle for a Ranger .22 rifle which was won by Nathan Cochran, with the proceeds going towards next year’s fireworks.
