Bee keeper Rory Small not only produces his own honey from his bee farm in Paragould, he has caught so many bees this spring and summer he has had to build new beehive boxes. About three weeks ago he removed a hive at ASU that he said was a lot easier to remove than the one he removed this week at the Corning Lake.
Each group of parade participants has been assigned a side street on which to meet and await instruction at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, to merge onto Second Street.

On June 18, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. The Clay County Sheriff’s Department conducted a probation search at 107 NW 2nd St in Corning, the residence of Lucas Leonard. Upon a search of the residence 26-yearold Lucas Leonard was taken into custody for possession of meth amphetamines, possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was transported to the Clay County Detention Center.
Black River Area Development Corporation (BRAD) announces Summer Energy Assistance will begin accepting applications on Monday July 10, 2023. Applications will be accepted until it appears funds will be depleted. Residents of Clay, Lawrence, and Randolph Counties must apply for energy assistance at the BRAD Agency in the county which they live. Applications have been mailed to households who were pre-determined by the State of Arkansas Human Services Food Stamp Program to be Elderly & or Disabled. Those applications should be completed, signed and returned to the agency in the envelope provided with the application as soon as the application is received. The three criteria necessary to determine eligibility for Regular Assistance and Crisis Assistance as determined by the State of Arkansas Department of Human Services are: Identification of all adults in the household (all adults must provide a verifiable ID and documentation of their social security number. Residency (the applicant must apply for assistance in the county where they live). Income (a household’s income cannot exceed the income guideline established by the State of Arkansas) and Resources (excluding their home or car, cannot exceed the guidelines for household resources). All applicants must provide proof of income for everyone 18 years of age and older residing in the home. The proof of income must pertain to the month prior to the application. Persons employed must provide all check stubs for the month prior to application. Applicants must provide both electric and gas bills for the applicant’s household unless the home is all electric. Verification of Identity for the person making application must be verified at the time of application. The identity of the head of household must be verified, such as driver’s license, birth certificate and or paychecks containing the name of the person. The annual Pollard Picnic will be held Saturday, July 8 at Pollard, Arkansas. Fried chicken dinners, music, baseball games, games for children, and beauty pageants will highlight the picnic.
The Corning School District recently received a grant providing $45,843.75 yearly for two consecutive years, which is being used to support the implementation and ongoing needs of the district’s literacy goals.
Ticket sales are increasing as the July 1st picnic celebrating July 4th along with the sesquicentennial of Corning and Clay County approaches. The Corning Chamber of Commerce welcomed travelers from Vanduser, MO this week who stopped in Corning on their way to the Henderson family reunion in Jasper, AR and purchased raffle tickets.
The Corning BRAD Senior Citizens Program recently announced the winners of their fundraiser to assist the program. Winners were Ann Reed who was sold a winning ticket by Lue Stacy and Ginger Segraves who was sold a ticket from Dianna Reynolds.
