Drew Calhoun, manager of the Arkansas Welcome Center at Corning, was among the Welcome Center Managers from around the state who met for their annual meeting at their Central Office in Little Rock during the last week in July. Tammy Boyce, Welcome Center Operations Manager said, “We pull the managers together once a year to discuss tourism policies, any changes they need to be aware of, and we give them an opportunity to bounce ideas off each other. We also explore something in whatever city our meeting is held in so that they can take back what they learned to share with the traveler coming through their center.” This year the managers visited the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts which just reopened this spring after a renovation and brand modification. “It is a wonderful thing for our managers to get together to bond, refresh and learn from each other,” said Boyce.

Lance Hewett, a 2017 graduate of Corning High School, has worked as a summer law clerk for the Law Offices of Katherine Blackmon, a firm that focuses solely on family law issues. Hewitt is now Rule 15 certified, which means he may attend Court and question witnesses under the supervision of an attorney.

Corning resident, Diane Sheridan has written and published her first book in the romance genre titled, “Two Weeks to Forever”. The publishing date of her book was July 30, 2023. Sheridan recently autographed her first book for Debbie Sims of Hooker at Mae Mae’s Flea Market in Corning. She will be donating a copy to the Corning Public Library for local readers to enjoy.

Welcome Back to School! I can’t believe it’s time to say those words again! What happened to our summer break? The longer I work in education, the shorter our summers seem to be. We are extremely excited to begin the 23-24 school year and welcome back our students and staff.

The Corning 4th of July picnic has been a topic of interest among residents, in particular among users of social media since the picnic celebrating the 150th anniversary of Corning and Clay County was met with the lowest attendance in recent history. In an effort to correct misinformation, provide facts, and enlist residents’ support; Amanda Wiedeman, President of the Corning Area Chamber of Commerce fielded questions from citizens at a public meeting held on Thursday, July 27. The goal of the meeting was twofold; to inform residents about the Chamber and its role in the community, as well as to garner ideas about ways to improve the annual 4th of July picnic. The meeting began at 6 p.m. in the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center with approximately 50 people present.
