JoAnn Brashers, 92, of Corning, AR., passed away Monday, August 14, 2023 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould, AR. Ms. Brashers was born in McAllen, TX., on October 12, 1930. She was a retired realtor. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was a member of First Christian Church in Corning.
Vondel Taylor, 69, of Corning passed away August 20, 2023 at St. Bernard’s Medical Center in Jonesboro.
During the July 1 Corning Independence Day Homecoming Picnic at Wynn Park, the City of Corning, Chamber of Commerce and Growing Corning Together signed a certificate designating Erastus Corning, III the Foster Godfather of Corning, Arkansas.

For 26 days the kindergarteners at Park Elementary will be learning the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. In order to make this important foundation to reading fun, teachers are encouraging students to bring an object to school that begins with the letter of the day or to dress up as something that begins with that letter.

The Corning School Board met on August 17, 2023 at 5:00 pm in the board room with four members present. Chris Shourd was unable to attend. The board approved the recommendation from Corning Mayor Greg Ahrent to accept Mikayla Mc-Clung as the CPD assigned School Resource Officer for the Corning School District and to approve the updated SRO MOU with the City of Corning. SRO Mc-Clung will be employed by CPD but will work at Corning Schools. Next, the resignation of Abbigail Horton as custodian at Park Elementary and her employment as Paraprofessional at Park Elementary was approved. The last item of business was discussion of new rules concerning student transfers in and out of the district. The board approved a Resolution for student transfers in accordance with Section 6-18-316 of the Arkansas Code and approved the recommended student transfer to Sloan Hendrix. There being no further business, President Scobey adjourned the meeting.
