State Capitol Week in Review

LITTLE ROCK – Participation in athletics at Arkansas institutions of higher education has increased in recent years, even as total enrollment at colleges and universities has gone down. About 3,900 students participated in athletics at ten universities and seven colleges two years ago, the most recent school year for which statistics are available.

Alice Veneta Stevens Amick passed away on August 23, 2023 at the age of ninety nine years, nine months. Veneta was born to Charles Edward and Martha Miranda Victoria Clark Stevens on November 27, 1923 at Beech Grove, Greene County, Arkansas. Veneta was a devoted wife, loving mother, and grandmother, caring sister, and friend. A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, Veneta was baptized at an early age and faithfully followed the teachings of Christ throughout her life.

4-H Youth Leadership Agriculture Tour

Agriculture and agriculture related professions are the number one employer in Clay County. The 4-H Youth Leadership Citizenship Team agriculture tour took place on Wednesday, August 23rd. Eighteen junior students on the YLCT from Corning, Piggott, and Rector High Schools had the opportunity to participate in the tour.

City makes concerted effort to increase local economy

Corning Mayor Greg Ahrent has announced the City of Corning in alliance with the NEA Intermodal Authority has strengthened endeavors to bring an industry and/or retail business to Corning. The city has listed the former Walmart building and surrounding property at 1900 West Main/Hwy 67 in Corning with King-Rhodes & Associates Real Estate in Cherokee Village in an effort to increase employment opportunities.

First load of corn delivered

Peco Foods announces the first load of corn has been delivered for the 2023 corn season. The first load was grown and delivered by Turner Farms owned by Jerry and Keith Turner of Success, on Friday, August 25. The corn had a moisture content of 15.8 %.
