Fall Festival at Overlook Park set for Oct. 7
Get ready for a day of fall fun and community spirit as the second annual Fall Festival at Overlook Park, sponsored by the Growing Minds Foundation, is held in Pocahontas on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event promises an excess of activities and attractions for families, all while supporting a noble cause.
Election Filing Period – Nov. 6-14
Filing Period for party and non-partisan candidates will be from Nov. 6 to Nov.

Roberts wins in tiebreaker
Dave Roberts selected 16 correct out of 18 games and won the Pick the Winner game for the week of Sept. 27 in a tiebreaker with his Clay County Electric colleague, Gala Blanchard. The pair have a weekly competition during the Pick the Winner season. Blanchard has won twice this season and Roberts will enjoy this victory as they both plan their strategies for selecting picks for the Oct. 13-14 games on page 7 of this issue of the Courier. Entries are to be turned into the newspaper office by Wednesday, Oct. 11 by 4 p.m.
CSD holds Annual Report to the Public
The Corning School District presented its Annual Report to the Public and Title I Meeting on September 25, 2023 before the monthly board meeting. During the public meeting all administrators share information about the individual schools.
Traffic stop leads to drug arrest
On September 21, 2023, at approximately 10:13 p.m. a Clay County deputy made a traffic stop on US 67 North of Corning. The vehicle had a Texas License and was driving erratically. The deputy made contact with the driver and as the deputy talked to the driver, he became suspicious of the driver. The deputy asked and was given permission to search the vehicle. During the search the deputy found illegal drugs. 50-yearold Randall Buck of Fort Worth, TX was transported to the Clay County Detention Center and booked in on the following charges: Hazardous Driving, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Hometown crowd enjoys Bobcat Homecoming
The 2023 Corning Bobcat Homecoming was held on a beautiful Friday evening, Sept. 22, when Corning faced the Marshall Bobcats at Bobcat Stadium to a hometown crowd. The Homecoming ceremony was held after the Jr. High football game and prior to the Sr. High game. Laura Johnson and Presley Martin were the Mistresses of Ceremonies, respectively, for the Jr. High and Sr. High Homecoming Courts. Corning FFA Poultry Show Team shows out at NEA Fair
Members of the Corning FFA Poultry Show Team took the poultry judging by storm at the NEA Fair earning top places in showmanship. Pictured are: Senior Showmanship winner - Mac Lunsford, 2nd place Senior Showmanship - Kilee Burkheart, 3rd place Senior Showmanship - Taytum Whitley, and pictured with the FFA Poultry Team is Charlie Swint who is the 2023 NEA District Fair Junior Poultry Showmanship Champion.

Green wins RiverBank teacher recognition contest
Amber Green, Special Education Teacher at Corning School was recently awarded a $200 classroom donation as the Corning winner of the RiverBank Back to School: Bless a Teacher contest. Green was selected for the public votes she received for her love of teaching and the dedication shown to her students. The teacher recognition contest was held in conjunction with an annual supply drive and was held at the following RiverBank locations: Maynard, Pocahontas and Corning. A teacher in each of the three districts received the $200 classroom donation. The Maynard School District winner was Cindy Flurry, a special education teacher; and the Pocahontas School District winner was kindergarten teacher, Leahann Bounds.
