The Armory @ BRTC showcases bright futures available to Clay Co. students

It was all about the students and their futures at the grand opening of The Armory @ BRTC as Black River Technical College (BRTC) hosted the ribbon cutting on Tuesday, Oct. 10, allowing the public and community leaders, a look at the opportunities available to Clay County students. Visitors and community leaders learned through student interactions and demonstrations about certification opportunities provided at the satellite campus, located at 715 East Main in Piggott. The Armory is a career and technical center, the only one in Clay County, offering certifications to area high school students that affords them an upper hand in obtaining high-wage, high-demand jobs directly out of high school.

School Notes

This week marks the last week of the first quarter of the 23-24 school year. I am extremely proud of our students and their accomplishments of the first quarter. Student attendance is the best we’ve seen it since pre-Covid and tardiness is decreasing. Good attendance the most important goal of the year; if your kids aren’t in school, we can’t teach them. High attendance rates are directly related to positive student outcomes and accomplishments. Let’s keep up the good work. Another exciting goal being met is through our Bobcats Read program. Through a SOAR Reading Grant, Mrs. Heather Clifton and her staff at Park Elementary have begun a most important mission…to get books in the hands of our students and families for all grade levels in our district. As of last week, 12 lending libraries have been placed around our communities with more to come. These libraries have all kinds of reading materials in them and are free to use. I’m anxiously awaiting one to be placed in front of my office that will house books for our high school readers! I can’t wait to see the love of reading spread throughout our community. If you haven’t checked out their Facebook page, please like and follow “Bobcats Read” on Facebook.

THE POWER OF PRAYER

Prayers for the bereaved families of Dakota Durbin, Christine Niswonger and Sean Rouse. Lord, at the moment when nothing seems to be able to help the loss felt. When hearts are broken and the spirit mourns, all that is known is that Your grace is with all.

Feature-rich lectern

Last Wednesday, a reporter asked Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders why a lectern purchased by her office (and for which Arkansas taxpayers were temporarily on the hook) cost more than $19,000, our governor replied, “There are a number of features.” It’s true that the higher-end Falcon Patriot Lectern does come with a number of features (including a built-in cup holder), but it sells for just a little more than $7,500 - https://www.ampli. com/lecterns-and-pod iums/3046-Falcon-Patriot-Lectern.
