Sheriff’s Dept. instrumental in apprehension of felony fugitive

In a letter dated Oct. 30, 2023 addressed to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, the Clay County Sheriff’s Department received appreciation regarding their assistance in the apprehension of a felony fugitive out of St. Charles County, Missouri. The letter, written by Captain David Tiefenbrunn, Bureau Commander - Criminal Investigations of the St. Charles County Police Department, described that on Oct. 25, 2023, their department was attempting to locate Matthew McMenamy who was wanted on felony harassment charges stemming from a series of threats he made towards one of the department’s detectives, the detective’s family and their business. Further, McMenamy was making terroristic threats on his Facebook page and alluded to an event he was planning that would gain national attention. McMenany also made serious physical threats against his parents, as he believed they were acting as government agents against him. The threats on Facebook reached a pinnacle on Oct. 25, 2023 when he began a countdown to this significant event.

School Notes

Oh, what a night Oh, what a night! Last week, our beloved Bobcats played in their first ever state championship game against Mountain View. Although we came up short, I couldn’t be more proud of the fight, determination, and grit our boys displayed on that field.

Bobcats of all ages supported the Corning Bobcat football team by making posters and cheering the busload of Bobcats as they were leaving to compete in the State Championship game against Mountain View on Friday, Oct. Nov. 3.

Shop with a Hero set for Dec. 9

Corning Cares is preparing for its 9th annual “Shop with a Hero” event slated for Saturday, December 9, 2023. As always, the philanthropic organization is choosing to shop LOCAL. The mission of the Shop with a Hero event ensures that children in families with need receive Christmas presents and have a happy holiday season. It also allows children to see local law enforcement, firefighters, First Responders as friends and people they can rely on. In addition, it assists area businesses and the City of Corning, as the organization spends an average of $10,000 per year in local shops.

Chamber Christmas Banquet set for Dec. 14

The Corning Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 2023 Chamber Christmas Banquet on Thursday, Dec. 14 at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center. Tickets will be priced at $25 each. The Chamber is continuing with the table decorating contest, this year’s theme is “Merry and Bright”. As tradition goes, individuals and/or businesses, who would like to participate, to have a centerpiece or a nice item on their table for a door prize. To request a black table linen, please contact Sherry Taylor at the Chamber office as soon as possible to reserve one. Participants may decorate their tables on the day of the event after 10 a.m. to be completed by 4:30 p.m. for judging. Certificates will be presented during the evening to the table winners.

Janis Gayle (Gearhart) Borden

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janis Gayle (Gearhart) Borden of Jonesboro on Monday, November 6, 2023. Janis is survived by her devoted daughter, Chrissy (Manning) King; and husband, Matt; stepdaughters, Tina Borden Craig (Barry) and Belinda Borden Lambert (Wilson); grandchildren, Addison, Andrew, Heather, Dalton, Madison, Ryan, Reid and Kathryn; great-grandchildren, Rory, Ryleigh and Mary John. She was cherished by her brothers, Wayne (Carolyn) and Jim (Linda); sister, Jill (Jerry) Boyles; sister- in-laws, Marie Gearhart and Carolyn Gearhart; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Borden; parents, Leo and Alva (Kirk) Gearhart; brothers, Joe, Leon, Terry and Tom. She will be remembered for her kindness, love, and enduring spirit.
