Grants available for charitable programs in Clay, Lawrence and Randolph Counties

Community Foundation accepting online grant applications - Jan. 10 to Feb. 15 Pocahontas, Ark. – Nonprofits in Clay, Lawrence and Randolph counties can go to arcf.org/givingtree beginning January 10 to apply online for Giving Tree Grants through North Delta Community Foundation, an affiliate of Arkansas Community Foundation. Applications must be submitted online by February 15. “Since our affiliate was formed in 2020, we’ve awarded over $30,000 in grants to benefit the North Delta area,” said Melody Rainwater, executive director. “It’s a pleasure to be able to strengthen this community by supporting important causes like education, health and community development, among others.”

Edington celebrates 100th birthday

By PAM LOWE Clay County Courier It’s not often a town is fortunate to have someone who has lived and contributed to a community for 100 years. Corning can count among its centenarians, Osel Edington, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday, January 5 in the presence of loved ones. The highlight of her birthday was the nearly 100 birthday cards, gifts, and calls received and visits from family and friends.

Sears named Artist of the Month

Terry Sears has been selected by the Corning Beautification Committee as the January Artist of the Month. He has always liked to draw using colored and graphite pencils. Retirement has given him the time to enjoy being creative. He finds choosing and blending colors and seeing his drawings come together very satisfying.

Harpole recognized for contributions to NEA Tournament

Coach Bobby Harpole was honored along with five other northeast Arkansas coaches and referees for their contributions to the NEA Invitational Tournament. Those recognized during the tournament on Saturday evening, Dec. 28 were nominated by area coaches and the NEA Tournament committee. Harpole has been attending the Northeast Arkansas Tournament for approximately 50 years. He was presented with a Certificate of Recognition by David Daniel, NEA Tournament Chairman, for his contributions to the NEA Invitational Tournament through the years. Daniel recognized Harpole’s accomplishments during his career that covered 35 years of coaching and over 20 years of broadcasting. Coach Harpole was escorted onto the First National Bank Arena floor during the recognition of his contributions by his grandchildren, Harper and Hudson Rorex.

Corning PD moves to new location

The Corning Police Department has announced the city’s law enforcement department has moved into their new location at 2300 W. Main Street at the corner of Stephan Lane in the former Doni Martin Center for Developmental Services building. The police department has vacated their previous location at 308 W. Main Street across from the Corning City Hall. According to Police Chief Blaine McClung, the interior of the building has been completely renovated to serve the police department and includes living quarters for the city’s ambulance service.

Ribbon cutting held for AMG Speech Therapy Center

The Corning Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony to announce the official opening of the Amber M. Gifford Speech Therapy Center on Friday, December 29, 2023 at 12 p.m. Gifford opened a new office for her speech therapy services at 600 West Elm Street in Corning. She purchased the former Farm Credit Mid-South building in February 2023 and after renovations, moved into the building and began treating patients during the summer.

Jailer arrested for theft

On December 23rd, 2023, the Clay County Detention Center became aware that an inmate debit card was missing. The Sheriff’s Department started looking into the missing card. On December 28th it was found that a jailer had not followed policy and procedure when dealing with an inmate or his personal property. It was also determined that the jailer had used the inmate’s debit card to withdraw money out of the inmate’s bank account. The Sheriff’s Department arrested 19-yearold Jason Jeffries of Piggott. He was charged with Fraudulent use of a credit or debit card, and Theft of Property.
