JUNE 2023 City honors Leach on retirement

Former Police Chief Jimmy Leach retired as Corning’s Police Commissioner on Friday, June 30, 2023. The city of Corning hosted a retirement reception in his honor at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center. Mayor Greg Ahrent presented Leach with a plaque with a police officer statuette that read, “Presented to Chief Jimmy Leach for 25 years of dedicated service to the city of Corning, Arkansas and the Corning Police Department 2023.”

4th Graders study The Middle Ages

4th graders at Park Elementary recently read a nonfiction book, “Empires in the Middle Ages” while beginning a unit concerning The Middle Ages. Students are participating in discussions about the people, events and important ideas from that period. So far they have labeled a map and identified the modern-day countries that were a part of the Roman Empire. Next, students were put in groups and were given five event cards. Students discussed the events and each group sequenced the events on a timeline spanning the secular times of BCE and CE to accurately place their discussions of the Middle Ages in the context of time and their background knowledge. BCE refers to periods of time before the birth of Jesus Christ and CE refers to periods after the birth of Christ.

Chamber hosts public meeting to address picnic & community role Amanda Wiedeman, President of the Corning Area Chamber of Commerce fielded questions from citizens at a public meeting held on Thursday, July 27. The goal of the meeting was twofold; to inform residents about the Chamber and its role in the community, as well as to garner ideas about ways to improve the annual 4th of July picnic.
