Busy January for city council

The Corning City Council has had an active January holding three special meetings in addition to the regular monthly meeting. During the month, the city council approved the 2024 budget, amended the city employee handbook twice and discussed and approved the rezoning of three R-3 Residential Zoning Classification properties to change them to C-2 Commercial Zoning Classification.

Foggy rainbow

Mitch Brown caught a beautiful rainbow when the sun shone through the fog last week in this photo taken on the Zack Brown Farms in Success. At least 25 states from southwest to the northeast reported near zero visibility due to dense fog on Thursday morning, January 25. Fog moved into northeast Arkansas on Tuesday morning, January 23 reducing visibility with periods of rain and fog sticking around through Friday morning.

QC meets for January

The Clay Quorum Court met in regular session on Monday, Jan. 22, at the courthouse in Piggott. Members present were Justices Dennis Haines, Patrick Patterson, Brad Green and Randy Kingston. Justices David Cagle, David Hatcher, George Lowe and Neal Smith were absent.

I went down to the tearing- down site

last week and told the men working there, “I am still very upset about this but since it is obvious that it is soon going to be a thing of the past, could I possibly have a couple bricks as keepsakes?” They gave me two clean brisk and I took them home, dated them 19091990, and will use them as door stops. I still can’t figure out how other towns can repair and have businesses in some buildings just as old as what we are tearing down, but we can’t, no siree, we have to start from the ground up… Remember the condition of the Fourth street school not too many years ago… they were about to tear it down… we came out of that repair job in beautiful shape.

October 18, 2014 Coming to town on a Saturday afternoon was a treat for everyone including these four young ladies pictured at Fitzgerald Drug Store in 1953. Court date postponed for Piggott women

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, the court date for Joyce Parks and Rhonda Parks has been postponed to April 12 at the request of their attorney. The Piggott Police Department obtained felony warrants for the two women on Sept. 19, 2023, for first degree false imprisonment, terroristic threatening and third degree domestic battery involving two juveniles.

Poll worker trainings scheduled

It’s time for Poll Worker training. In order to work at a poll in any election for the next 2 years, you must attend one of these 2 scheduled trainings. Training is only good for 2 years. The first training will be Saturday, January 27, at the Piggott Community Center. The training will start at 1:00 p.m. and continue until completed. The second training will be held at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center in Corning on Saturday, February 3 from 1:00 p.m. until completed. Please contact the County Election Coordinator, Karen Cagle, at (870) 240-3295 for more information.
