LITTLE ROCK — Arkansans routinely boast that The Natural State has more than 600,000 acres of lakes and ponds dotted throughout its landscape. While anglers have hundreds of thousands of these acres available for public use, many large reservoirs and oxbow lakes remain in private ownership with no public access. A new program offered through the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission offers landowners incentives to open their doors to limited fishing access on these areas thanks to the Arkansas General Assembly and approved by the Arkansas Legislative Council.

The Clay County Spelling Bee was held Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the Piggott Elementary library. When the final word was spelled Adalynn Moser was left standing as the Clay County Spelling Bee Champion. Cody Knight, of Piggott State Bank, presented cash awards to the winners, from left: Piggott eighth grade student Arwen Clary, second runner-up; Corning sixth grade student Adalynn Moser, spelling bee champion and Piggott fourth grade student Avia Taylor, first runner-up. Winners also received plaques from the Piggott School District.
LITTLE ROCK — Parents now have additional access to tutoring services for their children thanks to the Arkansas Department of Education’s Literacy Tutoring Grant Program. Because of the LEARNS Act, qualifying families can access up to $500 in literacy tutoring services from state-approved providers.
The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture will host the annual rice and soybean production meeting Tuesday, Feb. 13 at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center in Corning. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. with lunch catered by Cast Iron Kitchen and Catering. Speakers for the event include Stewart Runsick, County Extension Agent-Staff Chair; Dr. Jarrod Hardke, Extension Rice Agronomist; Dr. Jeremy Ross, Extension Soybean Agronomist and Dr. Hunter Biram, Extension Agriculture Economist. NRCS will provide updates followed by industry sponsor comments.
