Corning community raises $12,331.58 for Make-A-Wish

The Corning community came out to support the 26th annual 2024 Have A Heart Wish-A-Thon as volunteers braved the windy and cold temperatures to collect donations at the intersections of Hwy 62 and Hwy 67 on Friday, Feb. 16. Volunteers collected $12,331.58 between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. In all, communities in northeast Arkansas raised $467,966.73 for Make-A-Wish that will provide wishes for children combating grave illnesses. This total breaks the total amount raised in 2023 of $422,142.53.

Traffic stops lead to drug arrests

On February 10, 2024, at approximately 4:35 p.m. the Clay County Sheriff’s Department made a traffic stop in McDougal. The deputy had tried to stop the vehicle west of McDougal on Highway 62, but the driver refused to pull over for over a mile. Upon coming in contact with the driver, 43-year-old Justin Keith Lane of Pocahontas, the deputy asked for his driver’s license. Mr. Lane at first did not want to provide the deputy with his license, but finally handed it to the deputy. Mr. Lane was shown to be on Parole. A search was conducted on his vehicle, where a glass pipe was located that checked positive for methamphetamine. Mr. Lane was transported to the Clay County Detention Center and booked in on the following charge, Felony Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Monday, Feb. 12, 2024 7:10 a.m. - Citation issued for hazardous driving 8:00 a.m. - Dog catcher advised a pit bull running loose at the corner of 5th and Pine Streets 9:08 a.m. - Assistance requested in getting female with leukemia into the vehicle to transport to Little Rock for doctor appointment. Non-injury, female is just weak.

Early voting starts for Preferential Primary

Early voting for the 2024 Preferential Primary began Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center in Corning and in Piggott at the Piggott Community Center. Clay County Clerk Tyler Wyss reported 63 citizens came out to cast their ballot on the first day of early voting. While many communities are reporting a low early voter turnout for the primary, Wyss stated this was a good start for Clay County with a higher number of first day voters turning out to vote than usual. She said that Saturday was a good day of the week for those early voters who want to vote without a wait time.
