Rambling Vines

For your reading enjoyment, we continue to publish Rambling Vines by the late Marylea Vines as she recalls events and names of Corning folks from many years ago. We are currently in the year 1992.

JAMES EARL HARMON

James Earl “Jim” Harmon left this earth on March 24, 2025, at the age of 95 years, 3 months, and 24 days. Jim always said that he would like to go to sleep and just not wake up. Instead, the good Lord gave him one beautiful sunny morning. He waved hello as he awoke, or maybe he was waving goodbye. He passed away peacefully at his granddaughter’s home in Brookland. Jim was born on November 28, 1929, at home around the Nimmons Community to Raymond and Mary Alma (Sisk) Harmon. Jim gave his life to the Lord. He was saved and baptized in the nearby river at an early age. He married Mary Louise Eubanks on October 25, 1947, and to this union, three children were born. Jim was a member of the Rector First Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer. Farming first at Nimmons then located to McDougal to farm in the 50s.

Letter from Clay County Sheriff

As everyone knows Clay County had tornado damage last night, but compared to other places we were fortunate. Last night there was a lot going on at one time and dispatchers could get overwhelmed with calls for assistance. I want to encourage the people that live out in the county to specifically call 911. We had two dispatchers on duty last night to handle emergency calls. If you need immediate help from the Sheriff’s Dept. or other emergency services, please call 911. Sometimes when the other dispatch locations are dealing with their areas of calls, the Sheriff’s Dept. does not get notified in a timely manner that someone needs help. This is not saying anything that happens like this is intentional, but they can get forgotten to be passed on. So please call 911 if you need help out in the county, so we can make sure you get as quick a response as possible. Thank you, Sheriff Ronnie Cole

John T. Wayne: A grandson’s journey from hidden heritage to the silver screen

For most of his life, John T. Wayne, born Terry Wayne Hammock, had no idea he was connected to Hollywood royalty. His father never spoke of it, and his grandmother, when pressed, would simply say it was “none of their business.” But after years of curiosity and research into his family tree, Wayne uncovered a long-buried secret that changed everything he thought he knew about his heritage.
