The CHS Quiz Bowl team came away from the Senior High Quiz Bowl held on Thursday, January 25 in Walnut Ridge at the Northeast Arkansas Education Cooperative with a 4th place trophy. The CHS Quiz Bowl team faced some tough competition against some strong teams from Paragould, Westside and Greene County Tech. There is a detective story by Lemony Snicket called, “Who Could That Be at This Hour?” and in the book is a character called Dashiell Qwerty who is quoted as saying, “They say in every library there is a book that can answer the question that burns like a fire in the mind.” My immediate thought, “But what if that book is banned from your library?” Americans should be trusted to make their own decisions about what they and their children read. The Corning Bobcats defeated the Van Buren Bulldogs by a score of 67-55 on Saturday evening, January 20 to claim the 2024 First Nationa Bank Championship. .
The Corning School Board met in a special meeting Monday, January 22, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. in the board room with all members present. Resignations of Park Custodians Brooklynn Puckett, effective January 16, 2024 and Ronnie Jones, effective January 18, 2024 were approved. Next, the board selected CR Crawford Construction as the Construction Management Company for the upcoming new high school project. The board discussed possible dates for upcoming informative community meetings concerning the request for millage increase on the March ballot. There will be two meetings at Corning High School in February. Mrs. Woolard is scheduled to speak at the Corning Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on February 5. She will contact local mayors to see if they would like to host community meetings in their towns. Once the dates are finalized, Mrs. Woolard will publicize the dates and times in the Clay County Courier, through the school app, and social media sites. There being no further business, President Scobey adjourned the meeting.
Third graders at Park Elementary have been studying animal classification and have become animal researchers. Through the use of live animal webcams from the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, they have observed and described animal characteristics, habitats, and life cycles. Then they recorded their observations on a graphic organizer as research findings.
Let Kids Move: The Importance of Physical Activity in School I live in Michigan, and we’ve had a whole string of snow days lately. Over 2 feet has piled up already! For my kids, it’s been like an endless recess – sledding, building snow forts, having snowball fights, and getting together with the neighbor kids to play for hours and hours outside.
