Predawn fire consumes century old home
The Corning Volunteer Fire Department reported that at approximately 5:35 a.m. on August 30 they were made aware of a house blaze at 202 Southwest Third Street. Arriving also on the seen to help quench the fire was the Biggers-Reyno Volunteer Fire Department with additional help from the Corning Police Department and Medic One Ambulance Service. The fire was contained around 8:00 a.m. with nothing left standing except the brick walls, columns, and chimneys. The rumble continued to smoke for the remainder of the day.
HPEMC plans reading retreat
The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott will host a reading retreat on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., lunch provided. The reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sugar Creek Country Club.
Citywide yard sale date set for October 3 and 4
Mark your calendars for Corning’s Fall Citywide Yard Sale on October 3 & 4. The first yard sale of the year is fee, a $10 permit fee will be charged if you have previously had a yard sale this year. Permits are available at city hall.
Clay County 4-H Volunteer at Annual Farm Bureau Board Meeting Dinner
On Tuesday, August 26, Clay County 4-H youth members volunteered as servers at the Annual Farm Bureau Board Meeting Dinner. Clay County Farm Bureau Board President Mark Coleman presents the 4-H members that volunteered a donation for their service. We are proud of our 4-H’ers for giving back to the community and representing 4-H with service and leadership!

Clay County Sheriff’s Department investigates two deaths in Knobel
On September 2, at approximately 7:51 p.m., the Clay County Sheriff’s Department was contacted to conduct a welfare check at a residence on 5th Street in Knobel. The caller reported being unable to reach the occupants for several days.
City finalizes FUN Park Grant; playground beautification begins
On August 29 the City of Corning finalized and submitted their application for a FUN Park Grant to the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism. If awarded, the City of Corning would receive $100,000 to go towards playground improvements. A design has been rendered by Davis Playgrounds for what an additional playground area at Wynn Park would look like. As part of the application process the City of Corning held a cleanup day at Wynn Park on August 23 with seven volunteers showing up to help clean up the playground area. The City of Corning also replaced the wooded bridge from the walking track to the playground which has been out for a while. Grant recipients are expected to be announced near the beginning of 2026.
ARDOT hosts Future I-57 floodplain study meeting
The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) held a public meeting in Pocahontas on August 26 and Corning on August 28 to discuss and receive public input about the floodplain study.
Master Gardener training program opens for 2025 enrollment
Applications are now open for the 2025 Master Gardener Training Program, with in-person and online options available for participants interested in expanding their horticulture knowledge and community involvement.
