August 21, 2014 It was obvious Monday morning that the fall school term was getting underway as students arrived at the front entrance of Central Elementary School. Principal Heather Clifton was at the top of the stairs greeting a few first arrivals.

Rollover crash claims four lives

The Arkansas State Police has reported a 2004 Cadillac Escalade driven by 27-year-old Jordan Rainwater was traveling southbound on Clay County Road 232 at 12 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2 when it approached a left hand curve. Rainwater attempted to negotiate the curve and failed to do so properly causing the SUV to leave the south side of the road. Upon leaving the road, the Cadillac began to rollover and the passenger side of the vehicle collided with a ditch embankment. The Escalade came to a final rest upside down in the ditch submerged in a body of water.

Black River Trap & Skeet shooters bring skills to AIM Grand Nationals

Black River Trap & Skeet trapshooters displayed a great weekend of shooting at the AIM Grand National Youth Trapshooting Championships. Black River Trap and Skeet squads all came out in the Top 2 or the highest overall in their age divisions or classes. Coach Jim Clifton stated the Black River Trap and Skeet trapshooters had the best year ever as far as the number of trophies won. “All five squads ended with a trophy and that is just unbelievable,” he said.

McClung graduates D.A.R.E. training

Corning Police Corporal Micayla McClung successfully completed the two-week (80 hour) D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Officer training in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Friday, July 26. During the training McClung learned facilitation/instruction, classroom management techniques, learning modalities enhancement, communication/ public speaking skills and a working knowledge of the D.A.R.E curriculum, in the high school, middle school, and elementary school curriculum.

Clay County 4-H wins 1st Place at State O-Ramaa

The 2024 4-H O-Rama: Undercover Clover was held at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville July 23rd through July 26th. Each year contests are held at the state level. During the competitive events, our Clay County 4-H Food Bowl Team which consists of Kaelyn Burns, Emma Holmes, Hanna Lidisky, and Jaydin Stirnaman, won first place in their competition. This qualifies them to compete nationally at San Antonio in January. Jaxon Burns received a participation award in the highly competitive Public Speaking competition.
