Sheriff Dept. makes arrests

On May 6, 2024 at approximately 3:40 P.M., the Clay County Sheriff’s Dept. observed some suspicious activity at 1552 C.R. 481. The Sheriff’s office knew the subject at the residence was on parole. The Sheriff’s Dept. was able to make contact with the subject’s Parole Officer, and he advised the deputy to conduct a search of the residence. After the search, 59-year-old Randy Ford was taken into custody, and transported to the Clay County Detention Center. He was booked in on the following charges: Possession of SCH I or II GT 2GM BT 10 GM, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Council agenda covers pool, police vehicles and pooches

The Corning City Swimming Pool is set to open at the end of the month, according to Mayor Greg Ahrent, barring any weather delays. Addressing the council members at the May council meeting on Monday, May 13, he said, “We have poured the last piece of concrete. The women’s bathroom is getting the tile completed on it and the fence is ordered. Ahrent said in terms of the fence quotes he received from Red Beard Fence, LLC, the 346 linear feet of 6-foot-tall chain-link galvanized fencing with a walk gate and one double drive gate was $9,900 and a 6 foot Black Vinyl Coated fence with a walk gate and one double drive gate was $13,650.00. Clerk J’Anna Couch asked the council if they approved the price of the fencing. Councilman Randall Godwin made a motion and spending for the fence was approved. Ahrent said of the pool, “So, if everything goes right, we should be able to hit our goal of maybe the 29th.”

CHS Band to have moving sale

The Corning High School Campus will be building a new school in a series of stages due to the fact that the school will be built upon the location of the existing high school. For this reason, the Corning High School Band is having a moving sale which will include the sale of their old trophies from 1984 - 2000, some banners from shows and a few pillows made from old uniforms.

CMS Chess Champions

Corning Middle School invited all chess participants from earlier in the year to play in an end of the year chess tournament. Bentley Weaver was named champion, Chase Woods was runner-up, and Jace Morrow received third place honors.
