May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and celebrating recovery from mental illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 23% of Arkansans reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorders from March to April of this year, which is 2 percentage points higher than the national average.

The Lowe Down

As citizens, living in what the world sees as a free country, should our state or federal government mandate the books we read, websites to visit, social media outlets to enjoy, who to love, and enforce reproductive laws? Would such a condition be classified as democracy? I’m not asking if these issues in and of themselves are right or wrong. The question is, should your state or federal government maintain this much control over citizens’ lives? Where does the freedom of citizens of the United States begin and end? The growth of Christian nationalism is alarming in our country.

Local students receive YLTC Scholarships

Each year, Clay County Extension offers a 4-H Youth Leadership Citizenship Program for high school juniors in cooperation with local schools and sponsors. Allie Foster, Jasmine James, and Joslin Ward were the recipients of the 2023 Clay County Youth Leadership Citizenship Team Scholarships their junior year and received the scholarships this year as seniors. Allie Foster and Jasmine James were chosen as the outstanding youth leaders from Corning High School and were each awarded the $1,200 Joan Bauschlicher and Martin Ahrent Scholarship presented by Blake Ahrent, Matthew Ahrent and Tim Bauschlicher, along with Clay County Extension Agent Christin Holmes. Joslin Ward was chosen as the outstanding youth leader from Rector High School and was awarded the $1,000 Outstanding Youth Leader Helping Hands Scholarship. The YLTC Program was established to provide eleventh grade students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills necessary to improve their school environment and encourage them to become actively involved in their communities by volunteering. The participants attend seven workshops where they build self-confidence, team building, trust, accountability, and leadership skills that prepare them to engage in the challenges they encounter in life so they can make a positive impact on where they live.

Suspect arrested while out of gas

On May 18, 2024, at 10:39 P.M., a Clay County deputy noticed a vehicle sitting in the road on CR 254, just off Hwy. 135. The deputy came in contact with 31-year-old Jordan Blake Boling of Paragould. The deputy was advised by Mr. Boling that he was out of gas. The deputy also noticed that the Boling subject was nervous. The deputy asked for his identification and ran a check on his driver license. The deputy learned that the subject was on probation with a search waiver on file. After learning this, the deputy conducted a search of Mr. Boling and his vehicle. Mr. Boling was then placed into custody and transported to the Clay County Detention Center and booked in on the following charges: Possession of SCH I or II GT 2GM but LT 10GM, Possession of SCH VI LT 4OZ, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia Felony.
