Let Kids Move: The Importance of Physical Activity in School I live in Michigan, and we’ve had a whole string of snow days lately. Over 2 feet has piled up already! For my kids, it’s been like an endless recess – sledding, building snow forts, having snowball fights, and getting together with the neighbor kids to play for hours and hours outside.

Third graders study animal classification

Third graders at Park Elementary have been studying animal classification and have become animal researchers. Through the use of live animal webcams from the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, they have observed and described animal characteristics, habitats, and life cycles. Then they recorded their observations on a graphic organizer as research findings.

School board accepts custodians’ resignations

The Corning School Board met in a special meeting Monday, January 22, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. in the board room with all members present. Resignations of Park Custodians Brooklynn Puckett, effective January 16, 2024 and Ronnie Jones, effective January 18, 2024 were approved. Next, the board selected CR Crawford Construction as the Construction Management Company for the upcoming new high school project. The board discussed possible dates for upcoming informative community meetings concerning the request for millage increase on the March ballot. There will be two meetings at Corning High School in February. Mrs. Woolard is scheduled to speak at the Corning Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on February 5. She will contact local mayors to see if they would like to host community meetings in their towns. Once the dates are finalized, Mrs. Woolard will publicize the dates and times in the Clay County Courier, through the school app, and social media sites. There being no further business, President Scobey adjourned the meeting.

January is School Board Member Recognition Month in Arkansas. School Board members play an essential role in our community. Corning sweeps Harrisburg

All three Corning boys’ teams swept the Hornets on Friday, January 12 in Harrisburg. In conference action, the Bobcats took the victory with a score of 45-37. Coach Wes Couch stated the Cats struggled on offense but the boys pulled out a Conference road win. Top scorers were Jayce Couch with 20 points and Seth Green scored

Families enjoy special guest reader at Park Family Book Club

Park Elementary has implemented a Family Book Club this school year in order to encourage the love of reading. The monthly event strengthens the bond between students and their families in an evening centered around books and reading. The January Park Family Book Club was held on Thursday, January 11 from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at Park Elementary. Students and their families enjoyed the story, “ Axel Annie” read aloud by special guest reader, Superintendent Jennifer Woolard. They also enjoyed refreshments and participated in a parent and child activity making snow. Each family took home a free book courtesy of Trisha Woodard and PaperPie Books. For families wanting to participate in the Park Family Book Club, contact your child’s teacher.

The Lowe Down

More than once over the past decade I have wondered what our Founding Fathers would think of our government in the 21st century and of the current mindset of the American people. I wonder if they could have seen a glimpse into the future if they would have done anything differently or perhaps would want to rewrite parts of the Constitution.
