Blizzard drops plenty snow

The blizzard predicted for Corning by the National Weather Service a few days in advance materialized as expected with strong northeast winds and sleet changing to snow dumping 8.25 inches of snow in an 8-hour period. Snow depth at other Observing Stations in northeast Arkansas was similar. Some crewmembers of Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department reported to work late Christmas day getting trucks ready for the expected snowfall. First team left in trucks with blades to remove snow from the most traveled highways in the county. Later they moved to other roadways.

QC establishes 2024 operating budget

The December meeting of the Clay County Quorum Court met on Monday, December 18 at the county shop at 1020 N. Missouri Avenue in Corning at 5:30 p.m. with all justices in attendance. Prior to the meeting the county officials enjoyed a Christmas meal of Cajun dishes; gumbo, jambalaya, and beans and rice from Cullen’s Brew supplied by County Judge Mike Patterson and his wife, Pat.

Corning PD appoints chaplain

The Corning Police Department recently appointed Pastor Bart Baker as the new chaplain for the Corning Police Department. Baker is the pastor at the First Baptist Church in Corning. Police Chief Blaine McClung stated the newest member of the department will be a great asset and officers look forward to working with Pastor Bart as they serve God and the community.

Clay Co. Sheriff’s Department investigates shooting

On December 18, 2023, The Clay County Sheriff’s Department was investigating a shooting of an individual north of Corning in the area of Hwy 328, County Road 143 and 148. The Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call at 7:25 p.m. from a motorist that an individual was standing in the middle of Hwy 328 at the bridge construction. They said the individual stated he had been shot. The Sheriff’s Department, Corning Police Department and EMS responded. Upon arrival the Sheriff’s Department located the individual who had an apparent gunshot wound above the knee in the upper leg, first aid was administered by Officers until EMS arrived. The individual identified himself as 31-year-old William Clay Lester, apparently of Corning. He gave officers a statement before he was transported to Poplar Bluff Regional Hospital. The Sheriff’s Department has reason to doubt the individual’s statement. The Sheriff’s Department believes the incident started on County Road 148 close to Hwy 328. They also know another individual was involved. The Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information that could help in this investigation, to call the Clay County Sheriff’s Department at 870-598-2270.

‘Merry and Bright’ theme for Chamber Christmas Banquet

The Corning Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2023 Chamber Christmas Banquet on Thursday, Dec. 14 at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center. Social Time began at 6 p.m. with a dinner of fish and chicken and fixings catered by John 3:16 Ministries at approximately 6:45 p.m. Following the meal, guests enjoyed a game of Bingo called by Curtis Hogan, assisted by Bryan Dodd and Sherry Taylor. Bingo prizes were donated by local businesses and citizens.

Karen Rainwater, 81, of Corning, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023, at AMMC in Paragould. She was born on April 3, 1942, the daughter of the late Elmer Lawrence Rainwater and Ivy Imogene Stevens Rainwater.

Bobcats defeat Harrisburg; 62-41

The Corning Bobcats won two out of three games against Harrisburg on Friday, Dec. 8. The Sr. Boys beat the Hornets by a score of 62-41. Jayce Couch scored #21 17 points for the Cats, Luke Blanchard #4 scored 13. Seth Green # 14 and Jakob Cox #10 each scored 7 points, Roman Davis #13 made 6 points, Haydon Cox #33 shot 4 points, Spencer Blanchard #15 - 3 points, Reid McMasters #40 and Peyton Cartwright #35 each scored 2 points and Dash Ellis #32 added a point.
