Corning Lady Bobcat Head Basketball Coach Jerry Songer was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Dec. 13 in Springfield, Missouri. The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inaugurated Coach Songer and the unbeaten 2009 Sparta High School Girls Basketball State Championship Team at University Plaza Hotel & Convention Center in Springfield at the Winter Hall of Fame Luncheon. Songer coached the only girls state championship in the history of Sparta High School in Sparta, Missouri, while also serving as Athletic Director. The Lady Trojans were a perfect 31-0 after beating Canton 56-49 in the Class 2 state championship game.

The JV team beat Clearwater; 55-44 with lead scores made by Haydon Cox who made 24 points and Peyton Cartwright scored 13 points. .

Tuesday, Dec. 12, the Corning Bobcats walked away the victors against Maynard at the Maynard Classic.
Corning Lady Bobcats traveled to North Pemiscott on Dec. 19 and earned their 10th victory of the season. The Lady Cats improved their overall record to 10-5 and conference 4-0. The win extends their winning streak to 9 games in a row. Scorers for the Lady Cats were: Olivia Compton 16 pts, Katie Karr 14 pts, Celene Pankey 7 pts, Avery Glasgow 7 pts, Symantha Riley 4 pts, Leslie Dobbins 4 pts, Katie Zimmer 3 pts, Taytum Whitley 3 pts, Abby Staggs 2 pts, and Kilee Burkheart 2 pts.
LITTLE ROCK – A subcommittee of the Legislative Council recommended almost $5.9 million in funding for the Arkansas Fire Training Academy, the primary training ground for firefighters from across the state.
After last Friday’s Arkansas Legislative Council meeting, the Senate Committee on Rules, Resolutions, and Memorials gathered in room 309 in the Capitol to consider 93 gubernatorial appointees to various boards and commissions. When this committee meets to consider such appointments, generally one member of the press attends, and nobody from the public ever bothers to show up. At last Friday’s meeting, I counted at least six members of the press, including a reporter and photog for a Little Rock TV station and Matt Campbell with the Arkansas Times, along with a handful of members of the public.
