The Arkansas Legislative Council (ALC) and ALC subcommittees convened this week. In these meetings, members received an update regarding the implementation of LEARNS, an update regarding a study of our state’s firearms laws, and approved funding to expand nurse training programs in the state.
So, did you treat, or were you tricked? Well, Halloween has come and gone, and the spirits have all returned to their crypts… we hope. So, how did all this scary stuff get started, anyway? Is it just an excuse to get dressed up in scary costumes and deviate from our normal boring lives (if your life is, indeed, boring)? By late September the merchandising begins black crepe paper strung everywhere, witches in cone shaped pointy hats, riding brooms, black cats, grossly carved pumpkins, figures in flying sheets, and vampires and every other creature of darkness that one can imagine.
The National Institute on Aging defines Alzheimer’s disease as a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and an individual’s ability to think. The majority of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease are 60 and older, which can give the impression that the disorder is exclusive to the elderly. However, younger adults are not immune to the disease, and a small percentage of individuals under 60 could be diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s.
County Extension Agent, Stewart Runsick is presenting an informational Tree Walk at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott. The public is invited to put on their walking shoes and meet Saturday, November 4th at 9:30 a.m. at the visitor parking lot at 1021 West Cherry Street in Piggott. During the event there will be identification and discussion concerning 15 different species in Piggott. Participants will learn about the species’ history, origin, use and age. Some of the trees were most likely in Clay County during the Civil War and are over 150 years old. Some trees are native to Crowley’s Ridge and can only found in this area. Celebrating 150 Years of the City of Corning & Clay County in 2023 Last Friday night the Corning Bobcats won their District 2A title when they defeated Lepanto, 13 to 12. This moves Corning into the first-round playoffs, and they will play McCrory, winner of District 3A, Friday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, October 21, 2023 at approximately 8:19 p.m. the Clay County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call concerning a vehicle that had been run off the road at the St. Francis River Bridge on Hwy 90 toward Kennett, MO. The Sheriff’s Department also got a description of the vehicle that had apparently run the vehicle off the road. At approximately 8:42 p.m., the Piggott Police Department stopped a vehicle that matched the description. The vehicle was occupied by 1 adult driver and 3 juveniles. After talking to those occupants, the deputy learned that some type of altercation between the occupants of both vehicles had started in Kennett and had continued into Clay County. After a deputy talked to occupants of the vehicle that had been run off the road, he learned that both vehicles apparently had been at speeds of over 75 MPH. He also learned at some point the vehicle that was run off the road had turned its lights off. The two occupants of the vehicle at the Kennett Bridge were both 17 years of age, one was airlifted at the scene and the other was transported by ambulance to Piggott Hospital. The driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Bobby Clark of Risco, MO that was stopped by Piggott PD was booked into the Clay County Detention Center on following charges.
An official route has been chosen for the Future Interstate 57 corridor between Walnut Ridge and the Missouri State Line. The Federal Highway Administration issued a Record of Decision (ROD) identifying the Selected Alternative, or chosen route, for the Future Interstate 57 (I-57) corridor between Walnut Ridge and the Missouri State line, clearing the way for the next phase of project development.
Gala Blanchard was the clear cut winner this past week when she won Pick the Winner selecting 16 out of 18 correct games. Blanchard has won the Pick the Winner contest four times this season.
