Celebrating 150 Years of the City of Corning & Clay County in 2023 History of The Bobcats With Lurora trimmed, Piggott humbled, Pocahontas scalped and Highland leveled and our Corning Bobcats headed for a 1973 championship, now if a fitting season to recall the beginning of football in our community. The photograph on the Courthouse Square portrays the squad of pioneer Bobcats at practice in the Fall of 1910.

School Notes

At the conclusion of the annual report, the board continued with the monthly meeting with all board members present. Minutes and financial reports were approved followed by a facilities discussion including updates on various projects already underway.

4th graders experience taste-smell connection

The fourth grade classes at Park Elementary recently conducted an experiment about smell and taste receptors. Students took turns being blindfolded, held their noses, and attempted to identify the food items presented to them. Principal Heather Clifton was a surprise volunteer in the experiment. Students learned during the lesson that every time people breathe air into their nose, structures inside it sense different chemicals and then the structures send signals to the brain. They also realized that much of the ability to taste comes the sense of smell.

Corning FFA Poultry Show Team shows out at NEA Fair

Members of the Corning FFA Poultry Show Team took the poultry judging by storm at the NEA Fair earning top places in showmanship. Pictured are: Senior Showmanship winner - Mac Lunsford, 2nd place Senior Showmanship - Kilee Burkheart, 3rd place Senior Showmanship - Taytum Whitley, and pictured with the FFA Poultry Team is Charlie Swint who is the 2023 NEA District Fair Junior Poultry Showmanship Champion.

Hometown crowd enjoys Bobcat Homecoming

The 2023 Corning Bobcat Homecoming was held on a beautiful Friday evening, Sept. 22, when Corning faced the Marshall Bobcats at Bobcat Stadium to a hometown crowd. The Homecoming ceremony was held after the Jr. High football game and prior to the Sr. High game. Laura Johnson and Presley Martin were the Mistresses of Ceremonies, respectively, for the Jr. High and Sr. High Homecoming Courts. Additional photos of the Homecoming participants may be viewed on page 6 of this issue of the Clay County Courier.

Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

On September 21, 2023, at approximately 10:13 p.m. a Clay County deputy made a traffic stop on US 67 North of Corning. The vehicle had a Texas License and was driving erratically. The deputy made contact with the driver and as the deputy talked to the driver, he became suspicious of the driver. The deputy asked and was given permission to search the vehicle. During the search the deputy found illegal drugs. 50-yearold Randall Buck of Fort Worth, TX was transported to the Clay County Detention Center and booked in on the following charges: Hazardous Driving, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
