Corning Golf Teams take 1st place
The Corning boys and girls golf teams each took 1st place on Tuesday, August 29 against Piggott and Walnut Ridge teams at the Victory Lake Golf Course. The Corning girls came in first place with a team score of 169.

This month we received brochures from Buffalo River Air Tours, The Rag Barn in Alpena, Jimmy Driftwood Barn & Folk Hall of Fame, Rogers Historical Museum and the DoubleTree by Hilton Hot Springs. In addition, we also received brochures advertising Hardy Homesteaders Day, which will be on September 30 at Loberg Park in Hardy from 9 a.m.
Young children attending the Itty Bitty Story Time at the Corning Public Library on Wednesday morning, Sept. 6 had all kinds of fun geared toward the joy of visiting the library. During a tour of the library they watched library puppet, Bob select a book and check it out at the front desk. Bob also sang a special song about libraries. The children enjoyed coloring pages and listening to a story all while learning that libraries are a fun place.
The schedule for the 2023 Clay County Fair has been set. This year’s fair will kick-off with the usual pageants on Saturday, Sept. 9, although the majority of events are being held Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 13 to 16. All of the pageants will be held in the Clay County Fair Grounds Commercial Building and a $1 admission will be charged, with the funds going toward the Miss Clay County Scholarship. The pageant schedule for Saturday, Sept. 9, will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Baby Mr. and Miss Clay County pageant for boys and girls ages birth through 11 months. The appropriate attire is Sunday dress. The Toddler Mr. and Miss Clay County pageant will follow at 10 a.m. for girls and boys ages 12 through 24 months. The attire for this pageant is also Sunday dress. Little girls ages two to four will compete beginning at 11 a.m. for the title of Little Miss Clay County, and the attire is also Sunday dress. The Petite Miss Clay County will follow at 1 p.m., as girls ages five to seven will be competing. This pageant will also feature Sunday dress as the attire. Young Miss Clay County will be crowned in the pageant set to begin at 2 p.m. as young ladies ages eight to 10 will compete. The Young Miss pageant also features Sunday dress as the appropriate attire. At 3 p.m. the Young Junior Miss Clay County pageant will be held for young ladies ages 11 and 12, and this event will feature pageant wear. The Junior Miss Clay County pageant will follow at 4 p.m. as young ladies ages 13 to 16 will compete for the crown. This event also features pageant wear as the appropriate attire. All of the early pageants are open to all regional residents, and those wanting additional information may contact event coordinator Connie Vaughn at 870-598-4926. Second graders at Park Elementary had a literary treat on Thursday, August 31, when Corning Head Football Coach Farrell Shelton came to visit Park Elementary and read to them. The students enjoyed listening to the coach read and realizing that even those interested in sports love to read.
Park Elementary 3rd and 4th graders engaged in a lesson this week emphasizing the importance of using specific details when writing. Students drew pictures of a cat in which the description only used words, ‘cute, awesome, and beautiful.’
