Calhoun attends annual Welcome Center Managers meeting

Drew Calhoun, manager of the Arkansas Welcome Center at Corning, was among the Welcome Center Managers from around the state who met for their annual meeting at their Central Office in Little Rock during the last week in July. Tammy Boyce, Welcome Center Operations Manager said, “We pull the managers together once a year to discuss tourism policies, any changes they need to be aware of, and we give them an opportunity to bounce ideas off each other. We also explore something in whatever city our meeting is held in so that they can take back what they learned to share with the traveler coming through their center.” This year the managers visited the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts which just reopened this spring after a renovation and brand modification. “It is a wonderful thing for our managers to get together to bond, refresh and learn from each other,” said Boyce.

Delaplaine pond inspires children’s book

Amy Burgess, originally from Delaplaine, said it was her family’s enjoyment of nature and outdoor activities that provided the inspiration which prompted her to write a children’s book about a curious catfish titled, “Whiskers’ Wonder-filled Day at Nana’s Pond”. “Fish feeding time became one of my Grandma’s (Sybil Alleen Harpole) favorite things for her and my Mom (Leta Jane Burgess - Nana) to do,” she explained. “She would smile and laugh at how the fish would start swimming and swarming the bank before they could even make it there with the bucket of food! My parents, Leta Jane and Gary Lee, have continued maintaining the pond and the fish still greet them for their daily visit.”

RAMBLING VINES

For your reading enjoyment, we continue to publish Rambling Vines by the late Marylea Vines as she recalls events and names of Corning folks from many years ago. We are currently in the year 1989 Has anyone else noticed the pretty pink roses that line both sides of the wide driveway leading into senior citizen and low-income apartments on Success Street? I’ve been wanting them to do some landscaping ever since the apartments were completed and was pleased to see the many blooming rose bushes… even though the ditch between the street and the apartment yard needs attention.
