4th of July parade lineup and route planned

Participants of the Fourth of July Homecoming parade are to get in line and be ready to make their way from Southwest Second Street to Wynn Park past spectators who line the streets. This is an election year and politicians will be participating in the parade. Herzog explained that this year due to the lack of new vehicles available, the politicians will be providing their own rides this year. The parade chairman expects great participation from residents on floats, ATVs and bicycles, in antique cars or dressed as clowns. Many decorated vehicles, horses and farm tractors and implements will be shown. Herzog says each group has been assigned a side street on which to meet and await instruction at 9 a.m. to merge onto Second Street. Pageant contestants will ride on private automobiles and will line up on Olive Street on the west side of Second Street. Fire trucks and political office holders will line up on Olive Street between Second Street and the railroad track. Market Street will be reserved for antique farm equipment and bicycles on the east side of Second (toward the railroad track), while antique cars and trucks will be on Market Street, on the west side of Second (next to the courthouse). Chestnut Street will be the designated area for decorated four-wheelers, go-carts and golf carts. They will occupy the street from the railroad track to Second Street. On Chestnut (on the south side of the courthouse) horses and riders will wait for starting time. Arnold, Lucien and Bryan will be reserved for new farm equipment. All floats will be assigned a position on Second Street as they arrive. Herzog reminds everyone to be in position as early as possible because many floats, tractors and other participants will want to get to their proper places. The parade chairman requests that regular traffic not use these streets until after the parade moves out. Parade route At exactly 9 a.m., the parade will begin moving, led by the sirens of Corning Police Department. The parade

The crowd at the far end of the scene is gathered in front of Steinberg’s store, located at that time in the new Hopson Brick addition to the East side of the street. Steinbergs featured Brown Shoes and the attracton was “Buster Brown and his dog, Tige” who were showing in the afternoon in front of the Steinberg store.

Rambling Vines

For your reading enjoyment, we continue to publish Rambling Vines by the late Marylea Vines as she recalls events and names of Corning folks from many years ago. We are currently in the year 1989 We went fishing recently weekend… boy, did we ever go fishing! We not only got caught in three downpours of rain, nearly got stuck in the mid two or three times, got muddy from head to toe (ever tried walking on wet gumbo?), we managed to catch something like 4050 pounds of catfish! Our whole fishing trip was a comedy of errors, but everything worked out just fine and when it wasn’t pouring rain, it was cloudy, making it pleasant for fishing.
