The phrase “It Takes a Village” concerning raising children has been around for generations. Most often this proverb has been linked to Native American or African cultures where the community takes responsibility for raising every child.

An Arkansas Legislative Council committee on Tuesday, May 16 approved the reallocation of $34.7 million in federal recovery funding to support provisions of the LEARNS Act, a new law that changes multiple aspects of the state’s education system, including teacher pay, graduation requirements and literacy standards.

Clay County Quorum Court met in regular session on Monday, May 15, at the courthouse in Piggott with all justices present. Justice Dennis Haines made a motion to suspend the reading of the previous meeting with Justice Patrick Patterson seconding the motion.
During the regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, May 11, the Peach Orchard city council set the date for two public hearings for Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 7 p.m. at the Peach Orchard Community Center. The hearings are to discuss raising the water rates mandated by ACT 605 and to receive comments on the finished Paving Grant from the Arkansas Community & Economic Development Program (ACEDP). Residents of Peach Orchard and those interested in the city’s progress are encouraged to attend.

Special Olympics Arkansas Area 1 began its torch run on Monday, May 15, with the torch being carried by local law enforcement. Officers from all over the state will carry the Flame of Hope in their cities from which the iconic flame will make its way to Little Rock.

During the week of May 8-13, 2023, Arkansas Welcome Centers celebrated National Travel and Tourism Week. As a part of the celebration, the thirdgrade class at Park Elementary School participated in a coloring contest as the Corning Welcome Center. The students’ art was on display in the Welcome Center and visitors voted on their favorite during the week with the winner receiving a prize at the end of the week. On Friday, May 12, Skyy Freeman was announced the winner of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer House coloring contest. This year, to commemorate Corning and Clay County’s Sesquicentennial, the subject of the coloring contest was a drawing from the past of the Romanesque Revival courthouses in Corning and Piggott. The contest was sponsored by the Corning Welcome Center and the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center.
