The Lowe Down

Cemeteries are on my mind a lot lately, due to the time of the year I suppose, although I tend to think about them often. I sometimes watch videos on how to clean headstones and about people who repair headstones that have fallen over, I research people and photograph headstones for others.

Celebrating 150 Years of the City of Corning & Clay County in 2023 Welch Bakers and Confectionery, 1904 The first location of the Welch Bakery was on West First in the row of one-story frame buildings that stretched from Vine to Pine. The whole town expected the row to go up in flames some windy night but somehow that part of the business section escaped the fiery doom and the row finally succumbed to old age and progress.

Rambling Vines

I told Bernie Reed, formerly of McDougal, that since I could not find a diamond at Murfreesboro, I was glad that he did. And I meant it. I’m not likely to find a diamond there, because I’m not planning on going back! Bernie and his wife from Clarksville, Missouri, along with his sisterin- law and brother-inlaw, (Sonny and Winnie Barker) made a holiday trip to the Diamond Field at Murfreesboro over the holiday weekend and stirred up quite a commotion when he found a 3.85-carot diamond. They came back through here on Monday morning to visit his father, Bryce Reed, at McDougal and stopped at The Courier for a brief visit before heading for home.

Hop Alley Rally draws big crowd to downtown

Downtown Corning was the place to be on Saturday, May 20 as Growing Corning Together held the third annual Hop Alley Rally. Last Saturday, long time Corning residents were reminded how busy the heart of Corning in the downtown area was in years’ past as people and families turned out to celebrate Hop Alley. A younger generation saw firsthand what the downtown area could be with a successful revitalization. In its current condition it’s hard to believe that in 1942, when Chas. L. Bailey’s curiosity prompted his attempt to estimate the traffic flow through Hop Alley one Saturday as he sat in a rear window of his tin shop, that he clocked 1,781 people who passed by a fixed point in Hop Alley in an hour.

Goldie Fairchild

Goldie Fairchild, 96, of Sand Rock, AL passed away May 23, 2023 at home. Mrs. Fairchild was born July 10, 1926 in Knobel. She was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, laughing, telling stories, singing and loved country music.
