Volunteers show respect for military and community service

It’s not every holiday or weekend that Americans have the opportunity to show appreciation or demonstrate community service, especially when it comes to military veterans. This past Saturday morning, May 27 as the sun graced the lawn of the Corning Cemetery at 8 a.m., resourceful veterans were prepared to tackle the task of placing U.S. flags on veterans’ graves, alone if necessary, in honor of Memorial Day. After all, they’ve had much harder rows to hoe in their years of dutiful service to their country and comrades. The veterans from the Rapert-Poynor Post #8347 were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by 25-30 volunteers to assist them in placing flags on the graves of military service personnel that morning.

Man arrested after fleeing on backhoe

On May 29, 2023 Clay County deputies observed 40-year-old Rodney Thrasher driving a backhoe across the yard of a residence on Hwy 139 in the Leonard Community. The deputies knew he had a warrant out of Piggott. The deputies tried to stop Thrasher on the backhoe, but he fled down a field road. While traveling down different field roads the subject tried ramming the deputy’s truck twice with the backhoe. The deputy was able to get beside the backhoe and oleoresin capsicum spray, or pepper spray, the subject in the side of the face. The subject then traveled about 300 yards and stopped on County Road 513 where he was taken into custody. The subject was transported to the Clay County Detention Center. He was arrested for aggravated assault, criminal mischief, fleeing and possession of controlled substance and the warrant out of Piggott for unlawful distribution of sexual image on recording.
