CMS students model importance of literacy

As part of Read Across America Week, a group of 18 Corning Middle School students in 5th through 8th grade visited Park Elementary on Tuesday, March 2. The readers modeled to students in preschool through 4th grade classrooms the importance and enjoyment of reading. Upon arrival the readers were greeted by classroom leaders that escorted them to their classes, and also gave each reader a bag of goodies in appreciation. The activity was such a success that it may proceed and expand in the future.

February Welcome Center Report

Hello Clay County Courier readers, Our center has received many new magazines this month, including the February/ March Eureka Springs Fun Guide, February Ouachita Life, February Arkansas Living and March At Home in Arkansas. The 2023 editions of the Northwest Arkansas Official Visitors Guide (covering Bella Vista, Bentonville, Berryville, Eureka Springs, Fayetteville, Holiday Island, Huntsville, Lowell, Rogers, Siloam Springs and Springdale), El Dorado Visitor’s Guide and Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce 2023 Vacation/ Relocation Guides are in, and they are full of the latest and greatest events and attractions in those areas.

ARLEG UPDATE

LEARNS, we hardly know ye Filed just two weeks ago, the 144-page LEARNS Act (SB294) is set to head to Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s desk as early as tomorrow. The education omnibus bill got its first hearing just 40 hours after Republicans filed the legislation and only about five hours’ of debate and public testimony in the Senate Committee on Education back on February 22 .

Sesquicentennial photo exhibit opens

Drivers and pedestrians traveling past the corner of Elm and 2nd Street in the past week may have noticed a visual treat with the opening of the Corning, Windows to the Past exhibit on the outside of the former Thomas Brothers Hardware Store building on March 1. Photos from Corning’s history adorn the vacant storefront windows replacing what was once a dismal view for residents and visitors to town. The photos of Corning from its 150-year history represent industries such as the railroad, lumber, agriculture, finance, and downtown.
