With final approval given to SB294 last Tuesday, all that was left was for Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders to sign the LEARNS Act into law. She did so during a ceremony in the Capitol rotunda last Wednesday.
Just in time for Sunshine Week come several bills affecting Arkansas’ landmark Freedom of Information Act. Usually, legislative proposals involving the FOIA seek to remove more records or government activity from public scrutiny, not make things more transparent.
For your reading enjoyment, we continue to publish Rambling Vines by the late Marylea Vines as she recalls events and names of Corning folks from many years ago. We are currently in the year 1989 It never fails… just let school be called off due to inclement weather conditions and we hear the same old stories… “They never called off school when I was young… we walked miles through mud, snow and freezing rain… waded through flood water… but always had school.” Maybe so, but the time these people are referring to was when students went to school in their own communities and when one family was flooded out, most all of them were, only the students who lived in town went to the school in town.

Clay County was well represented at 4-H Day at the Arkansas State Capitol. Ten members of Clay County 4-H attended the daylong festivities on Feb. 28 to learn about state government, meet legislators and share their 4-H experience. For some, it was their first visit to the Arkansas Capitol.

Parent-teacher conferences are wonderful opportunities to increase communication between school and home, keep parents informed about their child’s progress, and make plans for the student’s future. Although parent teacher conferences are sometimes dreaded by all parties involved, they don’t have to be a bad experience. Productive and successful conferences are carefully planned and should include more positive information than negative. As a school, our primary goal is to make parent-teacher conferences as relaxed as possible. I want parents to feel comfortable asking questions and share with the teachers their vision for their child’s future. We want to work with parents to find common solutions to the issues our students face.
