Wiley Nixon

Wiley Nixon, 86, of Corning, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Corning Therapy and Living Center in Corning. Mrs. Nixon was born on December 25, 1936 in Knobel, AR. She had worked in a St. Louis area Factory. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of Purcell Church in Rector.

Gary Howell

Gary Howell, 79, of Piggott, Arkansas, passed away February 12, 2023, in Piggott, Arkansas. He was born on January 20, 1944, in Nimmons, Arkansas, and was the son of Roy and Lorene (Broadway) Howell. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Roy Howell, Jr., G.W. Howell, Troy Howell, Arlin Howell, Jimmy Howell, and Johnny Howell; four sisters, Louise Howell, Agnes Hatcher, Alberta Houser, and Audrey Darby. Gary and his wife, Sally, were long time owner operators and agents for North American Van Lines and Mayflower trucking company and was longtime County Judge serving the citizens of Clay County. Gary is survived by his wife Sarah Elizabeth “Sally” Howell; son, Jason Howell of Paragould, Arkansas; two daughters, Jenifer (Charlie) Cook of Piggott, Arkansas, and Julie (David Childers) Howell of Piggott, Arkansas; seven grandchildren, Zach (Blakely) Childers, Garrett (Molly) Cook, Wes Childers, Levi (Hattie Cate) Cook, Jackson Howell, Wyatt Childers and Madison Elkins; four great-grandchildren, Lane, Brantlee, Oakley, and Parker; brother, George Howell of Wichita, Kansas; and many other relatives and special friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 15, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Piggott, Arkansas. Funeral Services with Masonic funeral honors will be held Thursday, February 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Piggott, Arkansas, with Bro. Kevin Murray officiating. Burial will be held at New Hope Cemetery in Pollard, Arkansas, at a later date. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott, Arkansas, is in charge of the arrangements.

1st Choice Home Care hosts veteran Valentine Party

Kelsey Carpenter with 1st Choice Home Care passes out a Valentine trivia game to local veterans and their wives during a Valentine party held at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center on Monday, Feb. 13. 1st Choice Home Care hosted the party in honor of the veterans. Chili and the fixings were served for lunch, along with refreshments, including a birthday cake for veteran Jim Briney. Along with trivia, the veterans played a Valentine’s Day word search and a game using words associated with the day. Prizes were given to game winners.

Earthquake rattles southeast Missouri

Residents in southeast Missouri reported feeling an earthquake on Thursday night, Feb. 9 centered around New Madrid County. According to the USGS, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake registered 4.1 miles south of Catron and a 3.0 magnitude earthquake struck east of Risco at 9:10 p.m. The epicenter was slightly southwest of the intersection U.S. 62 and Highway W.

Former County Judge Howell, a proponent of disaster preparedness, dies

Former Clay County Judge Gary Howell, 79, passed away February 12, 2023, in Piggott. Howell served as County Judge from 1997-2016. He was born on January 20, 1944, in Nimmons, Arkansas, and was the son of Roy and Lorene (Broadway) Howell. Gary and his wife, Sally, were long time owner operators and agents for North American Van Lines and Mayflower trucking company.

Strong storm surprises Corning residents

The skies darkened and the wind was clocked at around 70 miles an hour as an unexpected strong storm caught Corning residents off-guard as it approached the city at approximately 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Local residents reported hearing a freight train sound. Amy Jordan, owner of the Parkview Restaurant said her establishment had a side window blown out with the building receiving structural and roof damage. Jordan personally sustained injuries while trying to take cover when she fell and hit her head on a table in the new dining room on the east end of the restaurant. She was treated for a busted eardrum and a sprained knee on Thursday. She said she will never forget the sound of the storm crashing through the window, the eeriness she felt while worrying about her kids who were at home.

Bolen surpasses 1,500 career points

Senior Whitley Bolen exceeded 1,500 points in her career as a Lady Bobcat during the Osceola game on Tuesday, Feb. 14 when the Lady Cats upset the #2 seed Lady Seminoles. The win improved Corning’s record to 24-6 overall. Bolen will have an opportunity to further increase upon her career points as the win against Osceola secures a spot in the District Championship Finals on Thursday night, Feb. 16.
