Birthday celebration for Danny Harmon

A birthday celebration for Danny Harmon occurred Friday, October 28 at the home of Danny and Sherlie Harmon in Lafe. Those enjoying food and reminiscing about good times of the past were Burns family members, Shirley, Carrie, Khoner, and Kelsey. Also enjoying the festivities were: Elaine Morris, Carlton and Pat Mullins; as well as: Sherlie Harmon, Amy and Gary Sharpe and the Harmon’s grandson, Reed. The boys also enjoyed playing basketball.

Wright lands 7-point buck

Tallie Wright was hunting with her dad, Matt Wright in Clay County Zone 4, when she bagged a 7-point buck using a crossbow in Clay County on Monday, Oct. 24. Tallie and her buck were featured on the Arkansas Big Buck Classic Facebook page.

How To Teach Essential Skills in School

There is nothing soft about soft skills. In the 21st century, the number one reason people are fired from their jobs is not because they’re improficient at factoring polynomials or understanding exactly how to use a semicolon. It’s not even because they’re not knowledgeable about the work they are doing. People are fired because they don’t know how to collaborate, critically think, exude confidence, and think outside the box. There is nothing soft about being fired. Polynomials and semicolons are still important, but possibly more so are these essential skills. Here is how we can teach essential skills in school so that students are prepared for career and life.

Three CHS artists voted ‘Best of the Best’ in Pumpkin Wars

Corning High School art teacher, Christina Patterson- Swint conducted the annual Pumpkin Wars competition where every student in her CHS Art Classes grades 7, 9-12 have the opportunity to compete. Every artist had one hour in class where they implemented chalk pastel or oil pastel to create a Fall or Spooky-themed drawing. The goal of the competition was to be the best of the best and on the board with the most votes at the end of the day. Monday, Oct. 31, the public voted for their favorite artworks exhibited anonymously on the CHS Art Creations Facebook page The community began voting from 3:15 p.m. until Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. Each community member could vote for three numbered artworks, 1-24. The top three were awarded prizes. This year 85 people participated in the voting.

Clay Co. retirees to be honored on historical walkway in Piggott

Clay County Arkansas employees presented bricks to three of their retiring officials that were placed on the historical walkway on the west side of the Eastern Clay County Courthouse in Piggott on Friday, Oct. 28. Those presented with bricks were Carolyn Morrisett, former Clay County Treasurer; Pat Poole, former Clay County Clerk; and Janet Kilbreath, former Clay County Circuit Clerk.

First time voters make their voices heard in taking it to the polls

Clay County Election Commissioner Earl Ladyman commemorated the first time these three young men exercised their ability to participate in civic life with photographs. Colton T. Evans, Colton William Kelsey Vallance and Chandler Michael Ray Jackson chose to have a voice in choosing the elected officials whose decisions impact their lives and community.
