I was for the Twins all the way and a cousin who was visiting for the final game is a dyed-in-the-wool Cardinal fan, as well as friend, Beverly, who went home early with a promise to call us when “the Cards win the series.” About ten minutes after the game ended and the Cardinals went down in defeat, Beverly’s husband called and stated, “Beverly’s not talking.”

Retired colleagues who worked together at Central Elementary met for lunch on Monday, Oct. 17 at the Parkview Restaurant. The group had a great time catching up with one another. Diners also enjoyed seeing their former teachers, principal, and some school staff together once again. The group is planning another luncheon in January to be announced at a later date. All former Central Elementary faculty and staff are invited to attend.
Voters of Clay County and particularly Corning, had the opportunity to listen to local candidates speak on their candidacies. The Clay County Courier hosted the forum for the candidates running for offices of State Representative in District 1, and the city of Corning positions of mayor and city council. The event was held at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center at 6 p.m. Citizens in attendance listened first to the candidates running for state representative; Democrat Teresa Roofe and Republican Jeremy Wooldridge. The candidates answered five questions they had received in advance. Each candidate had two minutes to answer each question.
I’ve recently introduced the television series, “West Wing” to my mom. I’ve watched it before, and I am inspired by the zeal, drive and ideals of some of the characters concerning our country, democracy and politics. We’ve been watching it while I work on the newspaper late at night. I knew she would like it as she has always been interested in the world and politics. She’s always subscribed to various newspapers throughout her life and keeps up with news. There are seven seasons in the series, and we were watching an episode titled, “West Wing Special Episode” in Season 3 the other night. This particular episode highlights some former people that have worked within the White House as they discussed their former positions. They all had very demanding jobs that took over their personal lives, and yet they all said they loved it.
