greg@gregleding.com Beginning last Tuesday, lawmakers will, over the next several weeks, hear budget requests from state agencies, boards, and commissions and make recommendations as to their appropriations. It’s a biennial process that always precedes a regular session, as lawmakers need time to consider requests, and staff needs time to draft appropriations.

What’s that they say about “if you don’t like the Arkansas weather just stick around a few days and it will change?” I’ve got news for you, it can change in less than an hour. Some friends and I had planned to go to Herber Springs for an outdoor event on Saturday and the weathermen had us puzzled about what to wear… heavy or light clothing. They talked like Saturday was going to be cold and bad with thunderstorms. Not to be outdone, we took off before daylight wearing medium-heavy clothing and carrying a trunk load of rain scarfs and umbrella, plus heavy jackets… I even took my Winter coat!

The Lowe Down

. I know there are those who believe that the death of the newspaper would have no impact on our town. If we were to ever lose the Courier, it would be as big a hit to Corning as the loss of Walmart was to the town. It might possibly be the nail in the coffin because the newspaper is the compass, thermometer, and thermostat of the community. The importance of a newspaper to a town is more than what meets the eye. Next to the school, the newspaper is a cog in the wheel of our region.

STIP includes I-57 project from MO state line to WR

The Arkansas State Highway Commission recently announced the release of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for Federal Fiscal Years 20232026. One of the projects of particular interest to Corning residents is the I-57 project from the Missouri state line to Walnut Ridge. Northeast Arkansas Regional Intermodal Facilities Authority Executive Director, Graycen Bigger announced the exciting news during the Intermodal’s monthly meeting at Clay County Electric in Corning on Thursday, Sept. 29. Bigger explained that the STIP is the State Highway Commission’s Bible. “If it’s in here, they have to do it. And both I-57 from the stateline to Walnut Ridge and the Pocahontas bypass did make it.”
