One time I had this idea to have my students go outside and have a contest to see who could build a campfire using just 3 matches and a pile of sticks, and it would all be in the snow in the dead of winter. But first we would read the short story To Build a Fire to get some ideas and inspiration. I mean, talk about connecting literacy with something fun!

From Scraps to Quilt: A Beginners Quilting Workshop Powhatan Historic State Park

Quilting, a popular pastime, joined together not only pieces of fabric, but people’s lives. Join us at Powhatan Historic State Park to learn this time-honored and beloved tradition. Participants will learn the basics of quilting: from piecing the squares, layering the quilt, and the quilting stitch. The $15 registration fee will provide materials. Please bring a sack lunch. Space is limited; reservations are required.

Howell receives Achievement Award

Clay County Extension Agent, Allison Howell was awarded an Achievement Award this week from the Arkansas County Agriculture Agents Association. ACAAA is the professional organization of county agriculture agents and specialists working for the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.

THE POWER OF PRAYER

Lisa Malone requests prayers for 15-year-old Dakota Durbin. Dakota has been battling B Cell ALL Leukemia for 9 months. He is currently in remission but has so many other things going on that was caused from some of the chemo used on his Day 3 treatment. He had a severe case of pancreatitis that almost killed him. It left him with a huge pseudocyst that put weight on his blood vessels and arteries causing blood clots in his leg. He still can’t get up and walk without assistance and not for very long periods of time. He has a colostomy bag now because his intestines haven’t been working and doctors have said if they aren’t working within 6 months, he will have to have a transplant. Lisa reported he is not a candidate for surgery due to all he has going on within his body. He also has a gastrostomy tube and TPN that is his nourishment.

Some Like it Hot

It’s hot out there. Real hot. How hot? Well, it’s since the 1980s, each decade has been warmer than the previous one. And, since there’s not a big concerted push to do much about it, you should expect the trend to continue. It’s going to be hot. Smoking hot. Like the end of “Raiders of the Lost Arc” where the guy’s face melts off hot. Like Icarus hot.
