Planning to begin to honor Corning and Clay County sesquicentennial

Clay County and the City of Corning will be celebrating their 150 anniversary in 2023. Corning residents are invited to attend a meeting hosted by Growing Corning Together to discuss the upcoming anniversary celebration next year. Input from the community is welcome. A representative will be present at the meeting to discuss memorabilia for the event. The meeting will be held Thursday, July 28 at 6 p.m. at the M.B. Ainley, Jr. Community Center.

Gov. issues statement in response to leg. council

LITTLE ROCK – Governor Asa Hutchinson issued the following statement in regards to the Arkansas Legislative Council’s decision on the use of money from the American Rescue Plan. “While I am pleased the Arkansas Legislative Council supports funding bonus pay for teachers, their action to rescind $500 million in spending authority for the Arkansas Department of Education is contrary to the Council’s statutory authority and contrary to the principles of separation of powers underlying the Arkansas Revenue Stabilization Act.

Rector Community Museum hosts Territorial Arkansas Exhibit

Rector, AR - Territorial Arkansas: The Wild Western Frontier, a traveling exhibit that tells the story of Arkansas Territory, will be displayed at Rector Community Museum, 310 Main Street, Rector, AR, on Thursdays - Sundays from 10 AM – 4 PM/ Sundays 1 PM – 4 PM]. Admission to the traveling exhibit is free and consists of 15 panels that explore the history of Arkansas Territory though the collections of the Arkansas State Archives and their branch archives, the Northeast Arkansas Regional Archives in Powhatan and the Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives in Washington.

Leaving the bunker better than you found it

Golf is the simple, yet complex, game of gentlemen. It is a game of respect and sportsmanship; a civilized sport played with propriety. Our society could learn a great deal from the basic etiquette of golf. It is a game of skill rooted in respect for others and for the course. My husband, Bobby loves golf and he used to play every day. In fact, he used to make golf clubs for himself and other players. In the last year he has started playing again and is having fun trying to get his game back on track. He and two of my nephews hit the links with him when they can.

Sight for sore eyes . . .

Farms in the area reported receiving around an inch to an inch and a half of rainfall from the July 17 storms to temporarily alleviate the drought. Forecasters report the drought will continue as temperatures look to be over 100 degrees in northeast Arkansas toward the end of the week and weekend.

Cody Dale Carter

Cody Dale Carter, 41 passed unexpectedly from this world on July 16, 2022 doing what he loved best, spending time with family and friends. When Cody was seen he always had a smile on his face and he always had a joke to make any situation better. He had many titles, amazing husband and father, son, brother, friend to many, hunter, fisherman, fan of the Razorback (was very enthusiastic about yelling at them when they were playing on tv) and a police officer who was always willing to go above and beyond helping out in every situation. Cody was an exceptional man that loved with his whole heart and let all connected with him know that special part of him and know they were loved.

Ola Mae Wilkinson

Ola Mae Wilkinson, 89, of Pocahontas, passed away July 12, 2022 at Pocahontas Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Ms. Wilkinson was born November 27, 1932 in Peach Orchard the daughter of Gilbert Martin and Finnie Jane (Cash) Wilkinson.
