Thursday, March 17, the Lady Bobcats traveled to Piggott to face the Lady Mohawks in a stellar victory. Corning coasted to an easy win over Piggott 10-1 as the Lady Bobcats put up 4 runs in the 5th inning. Kenlie Watson had an RBI single in the inning to lead the run scoring.
U.S. farm raised catfish is a way of life for Kenny Francis, his wife, Danielle and sons Austin and Fisher. Francis has been selected Arkansas Catfish Farmer of the Year for 2022. He and his wife own and operate Francis Fish Company, LLC in Corning.
CLAY COUNTY - Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller reports that on March 20, 2022 Clay County deputies were dispatched to a vehicle pursuit coming from Dunklin County Missouri. Clay County was advised that the subject of the pursuit was wanted for a stabbing earlier in the evening in Kennett, MO. Clay County deputies joined the pursuit in Piggott and pursued the vehicle to Pollard, AR. The vehicle was traveling in excess of 100 mph and driving recklessly. The vehicle went north in Pollard and returned to Missouri at which time Clay County deputies ended their involvement in the pursuit. The suspect was later captured in Missouri.
Elizabeth Draper of Corning learned Friday, March 18 at the UAMS College of Medicine’s Match Day ceremony that she had matched into a pathology residency with Harvard Medical School’s Brigham-Women’s Hospital in Boston.
The Clay County Courier won three awards in the APA Better Newspaper Advertising Contest. Winners were announced on March 11 at the 2022 APA Virtual Advertising Conference and Awards Presentation. The newspaper won the following awards for advertising in 2021: The Courier won First Place in Special Section Cover – Newsprint with the entry, Clay County Courier Presents Dear Santa by Pam Lowe. The judging comment on the winning entry was, “The fonts and use of red make the cover pop. The photo draws you in to the shop our hometown message.”

The Democratic Party of Clay County met Thursday at the Los Compadre Restaurant in Piggott. After a review of all the candidates who have registered to run in the upcoming Clay County elections they moved on to future plans. The topmost priority of this group is voter registration. They will be reaching out to as many people as possible to register legal citizens to vote.
Stanley Layer from over this side of Knob was a business visitor to The Courier one day recently and I inquired about his team. He’s the non-mechanized farmer who was subject of a feature story I wrote about 10 years ago. When asked if he still has the horses, he replied, “Yes, but they are like me, getting older.”
